There used to be a series for home built race cars called I think the 750 series...does anyone have any info in it...seemed like a cheap(ish) way to get in to motor sport and woild love the excuse to build my own track car - with something in mind to race it in...

If you are looking to design & build (or perhaps start from a kit, then modify it), then you should consider 750 Formula. The cars are interesting, and the Fiat FIRE engine has revitalised the series. I should warn you that they seem pretty serious about their racing (by 750 standards), but they are a friendly bunch, and it's certainly cheap.

Your best bet would be to establish contact with a racer. Explain your situation, and then offer to spanner for the day if they can offer you a free ticket. As well as working out whether it's right for you, and how you want to approach it, you will get known as a 'face' around the Paddock, which will set you in good stead for when you do start competing.
