I was thinking a few days ago about how people build their own kit car from scratch. Something that puzzles me though, is if someone was to build a one off car, and as part of the design copied something that was patented, what legal issues would result?

I know that selling an item that was (at least in part) a copy of a patented design would be a breach of patent law, but if they built it for their own use, would that be legal?

Technically I would have thought you would be breaking the law, in practice you would be spectacularly unlucky to get in trouble for a one off.
