Does anyone out there know of any dealers who buy and sell GT40s and any info as to which are the best replicas would be much appreciated. Thanks

First place to check out is www.gt40s.com which is US based site but has separate areas for the 2 UK based clubs.

You didn't say if you want to buy or build but basically in the UK it's worth taking a look at www.tornadosportscars.com and www.mdagt40.com.

You can get a kit of bits where you bolt everything together right through to a turn key where it's all been done for you (worth looking @ RCR and ERA in the States; very pricy though). There's also an inbetween stage where the rolling chassis and bodywork is done ready for you to drop in an engine/transaxle of your choice.

Some fully built kits do turn up on ebay and some have moved through www.sovereigncarsales.co.uk

Justin, Max is on the money with that advice. It's pretty much as my PM to James.

Max, any progress?

Charles, unfortunately no progress as yet - I'm still doing my research at the moment although I'm coming down on the side of a build based around the Tornado kit with some of the track/sprint specific upgrades that they do (things like rose jointed suspension and big brake kits).

Take a look at www.race-car-replicas.com in the US. Run by Fran Hall a Brit, nice guy and knows his stuff.

They ship to the UK and offer an Ally Monocoque chassis, there kit is quite advanced, prices are competitive to.

Cheers

Out of interest how much would all the parts alone come to?

That's the sort of question that kit car builders steer clear of and never want to know the answer!

it's also a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question. You could scavenge / modify / beg bits and end up with a bill 1/20th the cost of building it with all new parts, but then would you want to build a car that looked like a GT40 and went like a 20 year old fiesta...

There's a beautiful GT40 replica for sale near here at the Penn Motor Co. near High Wycombe. It's fully finished with all the right bits, and if I win the Lottery, I will be down there with the required £30k to snap it up!!
The garage can be contacted on 01494 816525

Which Kit Car June 2006 had a v good article on GT40 kits available in UK (back issue phone number 01737 222030) and the same issue features Hawk Cars who are agents for the new SPF GT40 Mk1 and Mk2 built in South Africa by the same company who build Nobles. Expensive but 90% of components in common with original GT40 including steel mono chassis and steel roof panel.

To summarise:
SPF GT40 built in South Africa, UK agent Hawk Cars 01892 750341 web www.hawkcars.co.uk

Tornado UK kit 01562 820372 web www.tornadosportscars.com

MDA UK kit 01404 823980 web www.mdagt40.com

RCR GT40 built in USA, UK agent Thruxton Sports Cars 01428 664276 web thruxtonsportscars.co.uk

CAV GT40 built by Auto Futura South Africa, UK agent Ai Autocraft 0191 492 6019 web www.cav.co.za

There are probably others as well but these were all in the mag.
