HI all,

I haven't been able to find much info lately about the kamala, is she dead? I did read in an older thread on here that there was suppose to be a new website, or a server change...Did they just kill the car after that hideous futuro came out and flopped!?? At least I am guessing it flopped... Anyone know if there are any good builders forums for this car, or a personal website where some one showcased a build?

Also, anyone know any good sites to look for these cars when they come up for sale? As an american I would kinda prefer a left-hand drive model.. Has anyone ever shipped a car, or all the parts of a kitcar to the states before? If so, could you post or pm me with any kinda idea on how much it might cost to ship to the states?

Do you mean this?

I saw one on the M25 in the late nineties - I love it but most people I speak to do not.

They were still making them at PistonFest - a smallish industrial unit at Snetterton Circuit.

They seemed to have a couple of levels of trim at least: a plush one with full leather, nice dash and covered wheels; a sporty one with a stripped out feel and open wheels.

Have you looked at the Dare DZ?

Similar concept/appearance to the Kamala...

HI all,

Yep, that pic is the car I want, sooooo bad!! When was pistonfest's last appearance? I like the DareDZ alot, but I like the Kamala RT even more! Thanx or the link, but I'd rather have more info on the kamala, like a website, or forum where car builders showcase their builds......

I thought it was a DZ when I first saw it at Snet, that's what snagged my interest the two guys working there were more than happy for us to look at the cars and take pictures - I didn't have a camera but a few others did, so there may be more pics out there. Check out the PF forum if it's still up, in the events section.

PF was back in... May... June? Must have been May.

Looks great both Kamela and DZ, but the PRICE of Kamela is much more inexpensive than DZ.

Really? I thought that less than £24K fully built for the supercharged version of the Dare was actually pretty good value for money, considering how much they charge for the old G4.

How much is/was a fully built Kamala, then?

it writes here: www.d8a.co.uk/dax.html
and said: Total build Cost: around £15,000 + your time to assemble.

Why the 'rolleyes' sarcasm, Neli?

I charge my professional time at £150 per hour, so I guess that stacks up if takes less than a week to build.

Seriously, though:
1) You're not comparing like with like, unless you compare price for cars fully built by manufacturer.
2) 'Around £15K to buiild' usually means 'around £25K, once you've added in the cost of a decent set of wheels, paint , real world prices for components, SVA test and all the bits you actually need to finish it to a standard you'd want to live with'.
3) The price probably relates to a 'basic' engine spec; something like a 2 litre Zetec. The unsupercharged, base model of the Dare at just under £22K is probably a fairer comparison, in that case.
4) Since the price is for a Dax Kamala, it is obviously well out of date, since Dax stopped production some time ago.
5) Kind of academic how much it costs if you can't actually buy one, don't you think?!

Remeber the strange tyre animal that used to appear on Dunlop adds? The Kamala reminds me of it!

Personally I won't miss the Kamala, it looks so ugly. The great shame of it is that there must be dozens of aspiring stylists, designers and engineers that would love to have been involved with spending the same time and effort on a car that didn't look like a melting jelly.

Hi all,

Can anyone who is knowledgable about the Kamala, tell me why the front wheels are angled in this photo? Is this a good thing or bad thing? Wait, is this that anti-dive, anti-squat patent? Anyone ever drive one, besides Graham Bell? What was this front end like when turning, did the angular wheels feel weird at all, or did it just look weird? Any info you have would be helpfull......Thanx all for your posts and your time!!

edit: to add photo...

That's just due to caster angle and steering axis inclination on the front suspension. Bit complicated to explain in words; get yourself a book on suspension design and look up the terms.

Bottom line is that it's nothing to worry about. All cars do it, it's just more obvious on the Dax because the front wheels are exposed.

As Sam 68 says, this is perfectly normal and just an effect of castor angle. Top Fuel dragsters run lots of castor angle to help them run straight, and if you see them with the wheels locked over on the way to the start they can tilt so much they almost look like they're about to fall over.

Certainly nothing wrong with the way the Kamala drove as far as I can remember.

Don't seem to have a current web site address for Kamala, but they did relocate to Snetterton circuit. There's a totalkitcar LIVE! event there on 28th August so you might be able to see them there.

For more info see www.totalkitcar.com

Dax sold the design of the Kamala and the people who bought it set up Kamala Cars Ltd. (or something similar).

Last I heard they had a new Kamala with a new nose with conventional enclosed front wheels as many people couldn't get past the "duck-billed platypus" looks of the original.

The Dare DZ is nominally still in production according to the Dare site but nothing much has been heard of it since its 1998 launch really, and I doubt if more than a handful have ever been sold.

Indeed. They obviously did the new nose treatment and thought "hold on a mo - this isn't ugly enough any more. Lets put some really hideous light pods on to make it f'ugly again."

Shame about the Futuro. They were working on the bodywork for the prototype when I tested the original for PH and the styling sketch looked fantastic. Unfortunately what they've ended up making looks nothing like the design sketch. Must admit it was a shock when I first saw it.
