Right i am looking at buying a Lotus 7 type car and the majority come with Willans harnesses. I have got an 18 month old who has a Recaro baby seat. Do you know if this can be used with the Harness style seat belt, or if there is an additional attachment so it can be used.

Cheers

My 4 year old front facing seat worked fine in my westfield with a 4 point harness but you'll need to try it to be sure.

We'd have to know a bit more really. Is the kiddie seat (I presume it's forward-facing?) one of those new "Isofix" ones or one that locates with the car's own belts? If the latter (and I assume it is), Is it the sort of seat that can be secured with a lap belt or does it need a three-point belt? FInally, how is the top belt grip (if it needs a three-point belt) arranged?

The problem with belt-secured child seats is that a great deal of their performance depends on how they fit on the car's seat. I'd imagine that the sort of car you're thinking of will have bucket seats and they might be too narrow for the child seat base. Also, even if you could get the shoulder straps in the right geometry, I'd have thought that they'd be far too thick to go through the top belt clamp on the kiddie seat.

I think you'll need to try it and see what sort of fit you get.

Also, if it was my kid, I might have a look at how feasible it would be to make up some sort of rigid foam moulding (a bin bag full of that expanding builders' foam) that could be used to make a sort of "booster cushion" for the child to use the actual harnesses in the car instead of the kiddie seat. The big problem here is that the shoulder straps might be too far apart for a small child and won't restrain it properly.

This was the other option i was looking at. The seat itself is a Recaro Young Sport
www.twoleftfeet.co.uk/copy_of_Recaro_Young_Sport_Grey.html

It is forwards facing and uses the existing seat belt to basically hold it in place as it would with a person. The red clip on the top right claims the belt in place after tightening it up everywhere else. It is isofix but we are not using it as isofix.

It says it is held into the car using the car's "3-point harness". I think that means conventional seat belt rather than harness. Can you go to a Halfrauds or Mothercare with the car? Mnay of these places will send staff out into the car park with you so that you can try several seats in your car.

Nice idea but he has it the other way round.
He has the seat but not the car yet.
Who has a seven with Willans he can try it in?

All this guesswork aside, If you go get a car I'm sure you can find a seat to fit even if you have to ebay your existing one. Many before you have done this and I've seen a seven with one in. For that matter I've seen a cobra with baby seat fitted to the bulkhead between the main seats with all three occupants arriving at Stoneleigh.

Post on there and ask how he did it. All Ultima will be minimum 4 point and most use Willans.
