Hello,

I am having a chassis designed at the moment and I need to decide which uprights to use, I need to use something where I can get access to the CAD drawings so they can be integrated into the chassis/suspension design. Anyone recommend anything that can cope with 180-200mph?

you should probably decide on your wheel/brake combo then try to find some uprights which will fit. I pressume you require the cad info so that you can decide suspension pickup points based on kingpin inclination angle and caster angle. maybe you should contact a formula car manufacturer such as reynard, vandiemen, lola etc these guys may be willing to help you.

Ultima or Foreman P4 uprights would seem to be an obvious choice.

It may be cheaper to find a scrap supercar and take just the uprights and brakes than to make your own one-off designs. Cleve Auto salvage in Gloucester specialise in exotic right offs. They had Jay Kay's Lamborghini Diablo SV and two Ferrari Testarossas a few years ago.

S2000 (for a lighter design) or Corvette uprights might be the thing.

Actually Corvette uprights might be ideal. Available, proven and capable for high peformance.

Had never thought about the Corvette uprights, do you think I would be able to get CAD drawing or would need to get my own done from the parts?

Isn't the weight more important? (not that I know)

How about not using donor uprights, but something like
www.nfauto.co.uk/alloy_uprights.htm
and I was going to say Raceleda - but can't fnd a working link to them.

It would seem that the raceleda website is not working at the moment

My alloy uprights were significaly less than Ultima ones and they are stronger. I got mine as blanks so had them machined for my application as I wanted bigger porsche bearings. Have no cad drawings of them though.

Another option is GD cars as they also sell uprights for a very reasonable cost.

Hello Andy, how much did the machining cost you and where did you get it done?

around £150 an Upright and at a local machine shop. The uprights were around £100 for the raw blanks and are prosport items.

I can get uprights designed no problem to fit exactly to my application, the only reason I was worried about this was the machining costs, did you get them machined from a billet of aluminium?

You might want to have a look at wheel availability and pricing as well ( a tip Andygtt put me on to!) as it looks like it's going to be easier and cheaper for me to get porsche pattern wheels in the sizes required than any other - which means if you use the Porsche hubs/bearings etc on prosport uprights as per Andy's (and hopefully mine!) you'll have one less headache further down the line.

When getting uprights (such as used porsche ones) from a dismantler is there anyway to determine if they are in good condition when your exmining them (other than obvious damge visible to the eye)??

I'm surprised that Porsche uprights are being suggested, the front ones are all McP strut except for the 928 and the rears are wishbone types only on the latest 911s.

My suggestion of Corvette units is probably just as good for wheel availability and the Corvette has been wishbones all round for decades.

What are Prosport?

Another possibility is the Jag S-type. Wishbones all round IIRC.

prosport are the Uprights and are basically similar to an Ultima but stronger as it was used in a one make series, its the porsche hubs that are being mentioned, I binned the 996 uprights.

this is the best pic I have of the prosport uprights.

The suggestion wasn't for Porsche uprights, twas for Prosport uprights machined to Porsche hubs. Prosport are aftermarket items, like raceleda (only I was forced to give up on raceleda after several failed attempts at communication!)

Good call on the corvette front though, certainly something worth considering.

ETA too slow again

I've asked Raceleda for geometry drawings of their uprights before, with no response, so the fact that their website is down may be irrelevant...

They used to have them on the site freely available - I may still have copies of them somewhere, though THB after the attempts at discussions I had with them I wouldn't be recommending them! If you really want them go to locost builders or have a chat with these people - www.mnrltd.co.uk/index2.html who are active on locost builders as well, and most helpful to boot.

Davi, if you still have electronic copies of the Raceleda upright drawings, I'd be interested in a copy, please!
