Ferrari engine - what transaxle?

I have been thinking about using a Ferrari V12 engine in a car project but not sure what transaxle to use; the engine I was thinking about was the 550 Maranello (5.5 V12) which has a transaxle. Is it worth using this item or trying to mate the engine to a flipped Porsche 6 speed transaxle? Ideas anyone?
I assume you are looking for a mid engine installation?
The 550 transaxle is designed to work with a front engine; wouldn't work very well with the engine behind the driver.
have you considered a Quaife sequential, as available for the Esprit V8?

Actually, it's not that expensive... if you can afford to build a car around a Ferrari V12, then the cost of a proper gearbox to go with it ought not to worry you.
Alternatively, ask around the Ultima forum to see what their gearbox of choice is, these days?

Porsche G50 is the 'Ultima' style box of choice, the getrag is nice but probably not man enough for that engine as it can't take the power the G50 can.
There are other desirable options but these are over 10k (like the Getrag would be when you bought everything you need).
May I ask why you would choose the Ferrari V12?

I had seriously been thinking about using a Porsche G50 turbo transaxle; Ultima have engines mated to it around the 600bhp mark and seems to hold up and also relatively cheap in comparison to Quaife/Hewland etc and plus I am not looking for a sequential box. I am using a Ferrari V12 engine as it puts out 485bhp and sounds nice!!! I have looked at a lot of different engines over the last 12 months and even with US crate engines including shipping to the UK you can spend a fair amount. I got quoted £5750 for a 550 Maranello engine and about another £1000 for the loom and twin ECU. Now I reckon £6750 or thereabouts for a 5.5 litre V12 Ferrari engine is a pretty good deal when car new cost £165000 and they always say you are buying an engine when you buy a Ferrari! It would appear that the 550 Maranello is not the most popular Ferrari relatively speaking and parts seem to reflect that and I have a bit of a downer on American V8s at the moment after having a GT40 replica; I think there are probably more independant Ferrari specialists around where I live than American specialists, so in reality making life a little easier too.
well if you have that sort of money for a Frari V12 engine,
you should seriously consider planting a Mendeola transmission behind it, the make absolute NEAT stuff. or look up a nice CIMA from italy they are out there!
also I'd like to point to the out of the box stuff, E-lite makes good stuff aswell for half the money quaife does. and the world doesn't end with the G50, but on the other hand it's the best box ragarding strength and availebility (spelled wrong sure)
did anybody know for instance that even Honda has a real transaxle box for a v6 v-tec engine?

I was designing a one off project based around a V10 (viper, lambo or BMW) and needed to source a transaxle to handle 600bhp. Only options I could find were Hewland (very expensive) or Xtrac (not quite as expensive). Mind saying that my installation was more difficult as I needed a transverse box due to length limitations.
well my vote is for a Porsche transaxle as long as the engine isn't too... it'll be the cheapest option that will take the power and match the engines revy caracteristics well.
I'm using a 6speed from the GT range that gives the beefiest G50 internals inside a GT case thats cable 6speed, but these are rare and expensive however the gearchange is to die for compared to the std rod linkage of the g50.
There are 'better' options that I would go for if money was no odject but we are talking over £10k min.

I do think the Porsche G50 will be the most economical option but would go for the turbo 5 speed box; I am not sure but I may look at a 6 speed item, is this recommended? Although I do like the look of the sequention transaxle from elite racing transmissions (www.eliteracingtransmissions.com/?p=welcome), anybody used the TXL200 sequention box?
thats a dog box, doesn't that means its straight cut? if so then it will probabaly be noisier than the engine.
the range of Porsche boxs that you could use is mind blowing, the G50 comes in 5 and 6 speed with all sort of ratio's with and without an LSD. Thinking about it you may even be able to get away with a good Getrag as I think the ferrari engine gets its power from revs.
I'd use a 6 speed with that 550 engine personelly.
