My wife is a shoe designer and has a new business. Children's parties where the kids (usually girls) are taught the basics of shoe design. they are given blank canvas shoes and a collection of beads and trimming and they then make their own pair of shoes, which they take home at the end of the party.

I got to thinking could something similar work as a kit car holiday. You turn up at an exceptionally well equipped workshop where there is a kit to build a Westfield or whatever. There are experienced trainers there and they help you build your car. If there were a few people all working on their own cars the trainers could help each of them when need be and the owners/customers/guests could hepl each other. At the end of the week each person gets to drive home in their own car.

You get the satifaction of having built your own car, but with expert advice and help on hand and without having to buy all the tools.

I wouldn't expect it to be any cheaper than just buying a built one but it would be an interesting half-way house between ready built and DIY.

Simon.

Did you ever see "build or bust"?

Therein lies your problem....... I guess the trouble is that people won't pay if it doesn't work out. Additionally it costs you more to build the car for them (if they cant) than it would if you just built their car and sent it to them.

You unfortunately don't know week to week if you're going to get three groups that can build their cars, three who cant, or some and some.

If you can find your way through that then, you have a successful business.

Edited to add;

Perhaps, on you side is the very general idea, that people with money have few of these skills, and people without quite often do.

A sort of compromise of this is renting out workshop bays, I have done this in the past to people who need a proper workspace, air tools and occasional ramp usage, bit of advice.

But you also have to consider insurance etc,

I thought there was a company doing something like this.

Cheers

I think it would have to be done in conjunction with the kit manufacturer.

ISTR that too. It was in one of the magazines a few years ago - building Locosts. You'd book a week off work, and spend the time building your car with assistance when necessary.
