I'm going to get slated but:
How bout a <1.5 litre turbo diesel one weighing in at sub 850kg in touring spec. Would be an immensely practical vehicle and fun to in a Golf GT TDi / Fabia vRS way.
I'll get back in my box now.

Hi Rene,
The Ballista is still very much alive but will be a totally different car from the unfinished Larini-based prototype shown at the start of the year. Likely launch mid-2007.

i agree - or a 3 cylinder 1.0 multivalve would be sufficient to see off most hot hatches - 70mpg +
what am i saying..... NO! a ls1 6.3 litre in the back ;-)

The Fabia vRS lump could be very interesting... jeez, even in the Skoda you struggle to get below 49mpg if you spank it... in something lighter it could be even better... and when chipped to 180bhp it flies..

I like what you've done with the BMC CDA and airscoop there.
Looks very nice. Not the colour I'd have chosen, personally, but otherwise pretty much the car I want.

I was thinking EXACTLY the same... I'd have gone Fiat broom yellow... EDIT - that said, if I had the money, I'd have been on the
by now... Edited by Podie on Thursday 7th December 10:47
yes thats the one - yellows too common imo - wanted something different
the filter set up is much better than the factory set up and sounds great. was concerned about water going in but doesnt cause any problem.
filter is the same one off a seat leon cupra, joined with samcos and a bit of flexy alloy to meet the rear screen. Scoop is from demon tweeks - just a stick on one

Thanks Graham, curious what they come up with! anny spy drawings yet?
And what will happen with that prototype, will they sell it or keep it for themselfs... they stil have that car on their website and advertise with it as its on sale.

I thought of that too. I suppose the only problem is the rear weight bias would be exagerated by the weight of a diesel engine (alhtough possibly not that much more than a V6) and the engine response wouldn't really be up to any steer on the throttle antics.

Have you had it on the rollers at all? Would be interested in knowing what improvements the CDA has made.
I can't believe that water in your air intake is a good thing though and that placement is surely going to scoop up loads of water off the airflow when driving in heavy rain.

water doesnt get in (well it hasnt to date anyhow) - 99% of it goes to the back of the scoop - where theres a drain hole. at the front there is a lip to stop rain run off when stationary. The secret is not to mount the scoop too far forward over the hole.
i sat and thought long and hard at the problem of rain - if its absolutely torrential you can flip the rear and move the flexi pipe away from the vent. Pros are much better than the cons ;-)

not a big believer in RR's - definately feels better than the standard pipercross set up which drags loads of hot air in.
i recon it must be worth about 10bhp given the much colder air.

The prototype never even had an engine and the new chassis is completely different (as is the body) so I suspect it'll just be scrapped.
No idea what the production version will look like yet, but the man in charge of development keeps telling me that any time I feel like visiting the factory...

Indeed, I was pondering the merits of the 6 speed 1.9 PD TDi engine in my golf.
The weight issue could be significant. They have a 48-52 fr-rr bias with the other engine options. Not sure how much more than the KV6 the diesel engine would weigh.
On the other hand, the 1.4TDi engine as used in the A2/Lupo is only a 3cyl jobbie and with a 5 speed box that package has to be lighter than the 1.9 with 6sp.
The performance on the 1.4 would never set the world on fire but it'd be nippy, the 1.9 would be damn nippy if chipped to 180 with a kerb weight of maybe 50kgs over a normal Libra (so about 840kgs
) But then, for all the custom fabrication etc involved, could probably just LPG a K-series and have effective ecconomy of about double the petrol variant and maybe run some extra advance for torque with LPG's higher resistance to detonation.

Sorry, we appear to have hijacked your cars thread
Did you consider fabricating a cold air box out of fibreglass and plastic sheet for the filter to live in with a duct running from the bootscoop?

The filter is a BMC CDA (Carbon Dynamic Airbox) so it is its own cold air box.
I've been seriously considering one on my Corrado for years but nobody has found a good way of routing the cold air feed pipe so the effectiveness is reduced.
