Cobra replica to Sri Lanka??
Discussion
Hello all,
I have been trying very hard to find a car to bring to Sri Lanka! I am seriously considering a Cobra Replica, but which is the best one? I don't want to bring an original cobra because of the difficulty of bringing original parts, and I feel it may not do so well in this climate, and the road conditions and couldn't forgive myself if it didn't survive here. I almost bought a MKIV two years ago to keep in London, but went for a Sagaris instead, yet I can't get the Cobra out of my mind!!
I can't bring the TVR here because of parts and lack of engineering expertise on the Island.
Could anyone tell me if they have trouble with speed bumps in their Cobras? Which is the most reliable/best made replica.
Many thanks!
Niro

Aren't the RV Python's made in Sri Lanka?
(I'm ready to be flamed for bringing the RV up on this forum... got fed up of the last debate and haven't paid attention since)
www.paralleldesigns.co.uk/ is the only place i can find reference to the Python without a proper look around

Regarding the RV Python, I don't know what happened, there was obviously a bad taste left in everyones' mouth, because I mention and Sri Lanka, and that is what people think of!! Two or three years ago, I heard there was a man who wanted to build Cobras in Sri Lanka for export, but all I know is it never got off the ground...
With regards to all the cack, I am sure you are right, you are always taking a chance when dealing with small business or even individuals. I am looking for the most reputable brand and even builder. I am looking in the region of about £20k, for a really top class car.

Vince Wright's the name, check this months WKC for details......
Plenty of first class replicas to choose from, Dax and Gardner Douglas spring to mind, but plenty of info on the net.
Why not wait a month or so, as all the major kit car shows are coming up soon, then you can see the actual cars in the flesh......

Thanks Vince,
Unfortunately, I don't have access to such luxuries as WKC in Sri Lanka, but when I am next in London, I shall pick up a copy. I have heard of Dax, but not Gardner Douglas. Are there significant differances between the top Cobra replicas?
Which is the best, or is it really down to personal preferance? How does the Pilgrim Sumo compare to dax etc.?
It is very unlikely that I will be in London next month, and if I am I honestly doubt that I will be able to spare time to attend the kit car shows (although | would love to!!)

I doubt those two phrases are compatible. If you want a built car, contact Dave Brookes or somebody like Soverign Cars, Hallmark Cars etc. You'll need £30+k for a nice Dax.
Whilst looking around I did notice many of the really special ones were a little more than 20k, I made that assumption based on the fact that I saw a original '87 MKIV going for 38K. I wouldn't mind spending more than 20K but is it possible for the builder to use all new parts? instead of using old donor cars? I would consider late 20K's if it was all new parts. I am yet to see any replica over 30K, but I haven't looked around all that much, given my location...

Trust Me there are a large number of self built cobra replica's that have all broken the 30K mark. I should now as I have one.
If you do a google search on Crendon and Kirkham cobra repica's you will soon see.
A word of warning if you are intending to buy one of Vince's cobra's take a look on the UK cobra club web site and do a search on the Python.
I have no axe to grind just what to make sure a posible new cobra replica owner gets all the info required to make a balanced decicion.

I was looking at the Kirkham website today, they seem to be very thorough when it comes to the cars they build. They are quoting $34,000 ish, which is if I am not mistaken, is sub £20K, and that is FANTASTIC value for money!!
The only thing is will they do right hand drive? Equally important (due to Sri Lankan weather) is air conditioning an option? I am sure that comment is going to cause some unfavorable reactions, but TBH I don't think I can handle 35 + degree heat without aircon!!!
How reliable are the cobra replicas? I presume they are more reliable than the originals, due to modern materials, and technology. Are they start and go cars or do they need a lot of attention? If great attention is needed what is it? Build quality, mechanical, little niggles... etc... Luckily there is no shortage of labor, but I would like minimal repairs to be carried out in SL.
With regards to buying a python, without people saying very much, I get the feeling people are not very impressed, and from the little I heard from the local enthusiasts, they were quite disappointed with the project. So I would be happier to bring a tried and tested monster onto the island...
Most of the Cobra replicas use new (as in either new or reconditioned/remanufactured to as new) engines and gearboxes, the saving involved in buying used parts is fairly small as a percentage of the overall cost, depending on how much power you want.
The current Dax demonstrator, for example, has 500bhp from a 502ci engine IIRC with fuel injection, servo brakes, power steering and LSD etc, you could use it as an everyday car. You could easily add air con if you wanted to, there are aftermarket kits you could install or you could adapt something from an existing installation.

Sir, My name is Sonny and I would like to say that I have been to Ratmalana Sri Lanka and I have meet a good many people there for the 4 months I was there one of those is Vince Wright with the (python) cobra replica and I know for a fact if you go to Ratmalana Industrial zone you can view the factory and take a ride in the first cobra on the on the Island which is at the factory now and you can see the next kits to ship here to America. I will only tell you facts and show you with your own eyes the truth. Not just regurgitate what other have told me or what I think I know about cars. Why there is only one cobra on the planet that will last over in SL. Due to the rust from the climate you know all about. Oh and it has A/C and a good looking Hardtop. I can furnish you pictures of the hard-top as it was being built buy Vince there in the factory. the hard top was hand beaten and wheeled from a flat sheet of Aluminum. Which is now produced in fiberglass as even aluminum corrodes away after being exposed to salt as any one from UK knows. If you want to talk one on one or see pictures of the cars that are in the US or in the UK for a few tried and tested years now then send me an e-mail. If not happy motoring and have a good day.
Notice I have not said anything Rude or Hateful things about any of the other cobra replica manufacturers in the US or UK. I will even say that Dax has a great interior I loved it. I will also say that gardener douglas has just as good panel fit as the python. I have the pictures from the stoneliegh or Donington show in UK to prove all that I say here.
Oh one last thing with what 241% import duty i think it is now. On all cars coming into SL I think buying one there will be better for you in the long run. Even If some feel I am right or wrong about my Undeniable Facts.
Thank you and Good Day Sonny B.

Well Balance it may not have been a Python but it was from the SA factory and I do not think it matters which car it is you buy from them.
You clearly want me to publically explain more about why I am unhappy however money isn't the reason.
It's quite clear what your hinting, but I actually paid more than the value on the orders which had been were signed by both me AND on behalf of the factory. In some cases it was years before parts were made. I'm also still waiting for parts for 2 years after they were paid for in full.
I can go on (I've deleted 2 paragraphs) but I think its best I leave it. They may have satisfied customers, but I am most certainly not one of them.
