Hi Guys,

Went to go see a Westfield today.

Are there any issues with having a windscreen and no wipers or motor, also there is no reverse light on it. Would this still go through the MOT test OK.

Anyone know or have any history on this car, is a 1991 Westfield Q707 DPF.

Thanks in anticipation.

Mine has no reversing light and had no probs with MoT. Think you are more likely to struggle with a windscreen and no way of cleaning it tho!

If its aeroscreen then no worries. I'm sure someone will be along in a while with the exact wording from the MOT manual...

As I understand it, unless the windscreen either folds down or hinges up then you need wipers and washers.

There is a height issue with a windscreen and wipers but i haven't a clue what the criteria is.

If it is a low screen then no wipers. Likewise it does not need demisters. Quite where the divide line is between the heights I don't know. Applying logic, I would think your normal driving position would have you seeing over the screen in order to not need wipers.

Reverse light is not a requirement but if one is fitted then it must be working.

I heard of one person who took his LSIS for an SVA - he had a very low windscreen that he thought wouldn't have needed wipers.

He would've been right, if he was 6' - but he was closer to 4' tall, and the SVA examiner decided that the windscreen was effectively a full windscreen for him, and would need wipers.

Sorry to hijack but i have a question on the windscreen and wipers. My Cat is due for it's MOT end of next month. Washed it at the weekend and began to make sure everything was all ok for MOT. Now i have got a full windscreen and wiper. The wipers are very sad indeed, they struggle to go up, but are fine going down. If you take them off the glass they are fine. Any suggestions?

"Applying logic, I would think your normal driving position would have you seeing over the screen in order to not need wipers." - basically correct, as has already been said, if an aeroscreen is fitted then no requirement for washers/wipers, demist is NOT part of the MoT (but is part of SVA). Reverse light is NOT part of an MoT whether fitted or not (it is part of SVA if fitted).
Re the non-working wipers above it's either a knackered wiper motor or very poor feed to it (wire or connection would be getting very hot when in use), only other likely alternative, though I doubt it as you say the wipers go down ok, would be partial seizure within the linkage/wheelboxes.

You will find if you have a windscreen then you will need to have a working wash / wipe system to meet the MOT.

The lack of reversing light is very much down to how good the MOT tester is on the regs and if he applys them.

I have a cobra replica which has been on the road since 1993 and has no reverse light and has never been pick up at the MOT.

I think you will find if you take a rough looking car in for an MOT the tester will go to town on it. Take in a clean well presented car and you are already on to a winner.

which ever way you go I hope that you get the enjoyment from Kit car ownership that I do.

Reversing lights are not part of the MOT according to my tester and he passed a car of my daughter's with a non-working reversing light. As for the aeroscreen, go to www.wscc.co.uk and trawl the forums - there's an FAQ section. Fog rear lights have to work only if they're fitted on 'Q' plates.

Yes the only lights needed for a mot is sides, numberplate, dip, main, brake, rear fog,hazards/indicators.
However most advise if a reverse light is out if they check it.

Am I the only one who wonders how the car would not have had an MOT for 16 years? Surely it must be ok as it is, unless the wipers got removed recentely... I will check the SVA book now anyway.

There you go, bit hard to picture but that might be why. One page later it explains that wipers are not needed if the top edge of the screen is below that "horizontal plane".

Trust someone to come up with a fully documented technical answer.
Takes all the fun out of second guessing each other.

Well done.
