registering a kit car - what tax will I get?
Discussion
Soon I'm going to register my Tiger - it's a 2 litre zetec (1994 engine) and all the other mechanical parts are old, so it will get a Q plate, but I'm a tad concerned that because it will class as being registered after March 2007 that I will in some way be stung by the new band-G.
Under these new tax bandings, from what I can understand (using the government listings page below) only new cars that are type-approved to be rated by CO2 emissions fall into the new bands - anything older or not type approved will class as the old style Private / Light Goods (PLG) vehicle (TC11) and the tax will be £180 if the engine size is over 1.5 litres.

Does anyone know if I've interpreted this correctly? Typically the DVLA / VOSA email system is not working so I can't get a response from them.

You have it spot on. £180
As you say it only applies to type approved with a stated emissions figure.
If you have a youngish engine there may be a stated emissions figure you will be tested on at SVA and subsequent MOTs but this will not put you in an emissions related tax band.

does that apply no matter what? so Andy with his stonking V12 or my hopefull V6 will both still only get a £180 fee?
Yep.
The tax system as shown in that link above puts cars in different tax bands based on the tested and proven emissions when it went for Type Approvaland covers cars after 2001.
So your V6 or V12 and my 6.7litre V8 are outside of that so will be £180 because they are above 1549cc.
Suit you sir.
