Converting FWD zetec / duratec to RWD car?
Discussion
Trying to help a young lad I know with his project car, we've been through just about every iteration of what performance he wants and what he can realistically achieve / afford....
He has a road going Jago at the moment, but want's more poke than the knackered old escort engine produces, so I've suggested for simplicity sake he just get the lastest incarnation, be it a duratec or zetec.
Question is, what are the options on joining a duratec or zetec to a RWD set up? knowing the exact current setup is tricky (he lives a fair distance from me so it's all done via MSN!), but I can say it's all mkII escort - 1600 engine, 1300 GB and diff.
any and all options appreciated!

To fit the Zetec to a MK2 Escort/jago talk check this forum www.turbosport.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=143
it is specially to fit the zetec in to MK1 and MK2 ford Escorts also else where in the forum there is one for the Duratec,
from what I can gather the 1800 engine from the escort is the best to go for with a type 9 box and a hybrid clutch
part Zetec Pressure plate part crossflow friction plate and a capri?? release bearing
Carbs or fuel injection I have seen standard Injection, twin choke webers and even a down draft weber on a special manifold using old ford ignition DIS runing from a crank sensor I think it is from a 1300 with a carb but not sure,
any way this forum has all the answers

Zetec bolts to a type 9 gearbox no probs.
Duratec does not. It's got a totally different bolt pattern, so would need a custom bellhousing to mate it to a RWD gearbox.

no change of bellhousing for zetec to type 9 then? was just reading and someone mentioned needing an RS2000 bellhousing?

All Ford 4 pots from the pre-crossflow through X-flow, Pinto, CVH and Zetec use the same bolt pattern on the back of the block, so any 4-pot Cortina or Sierra bellhousing should do. Only difference with the RS2000 one is that it's ally not cast iron.
As mentioned, Duratec is completely diffrent, and while you can get bellhousings for RWD fits they're specialist jobs and not cheap, so Zetec would be better option - though you've still got the water pipes and other bits to sort out so hardly a straight swap.
many thanks Ben & Graham, zetec is now firmly the choice.
Westyman - you think this is too powerful for a Jago, you should see what some people are sticking in them...!!!
Obviously it's not going to be simply a case of bolting an engine in and hooning off into the sunset, but he has to start somewhere and without a firmed up plan he's just been going in circles. Now the block n box are decided it's much simpler to plan what else is needed.
