hi.

My seven kit car has a 4 speed gearbox from a cortina. Its jumping out of gear and needs replacing. Was wondering if the type 9 5 speed box will fit. Is it a straight swap? Im just about to start building a 2.1 pinto engine, but reckon it will cost about the same as a second hand cosworth YB engine. If i went down the cosworth route, would the type 9 be strong enough? What about the mt75 box. Would that fit?

thanks

The type 9 is fairly strong but I believe, and I may well be corrected, that it reaches its limit at around 250hp, maybe a little lower.

Is the 4 speed Cortina box not a type 9 anyway, type 9s come in 4 and 5 speed, there are two different lengths though.

Why not go with a Zetec. a 2.0 with decent exhaust and throttle bodies will make around 170 horses.

Flow the head and give it some 285 cams and you will be around 200bhp. And that's without spending loads of cash.

I started with a modified Pinto but swapped to a Zetec over the winter. Good Choice!!!

I thought the type 9 came in with the Sierra and is longer than the earlier 4spd boxes.

Could be got in 4spd and 5spd but the 4spd Sierra box is not the same as the 4spd Cortina box.

Same bolt pattern so they're interchangeable, however the gearshift lever hole moves rearward and you need a shorter prop. Gearbox mount moves too, maybe?

Agree with a Zetec rather than a Pinto though, and I'm not a fan of turbo power delivery in lightweight cars so I wouldn't go YB either.

I've know a fella with a Nissan 200SX turbo engine in his Dax and it's damn quick but not what you'd call easy to drive at a serious pace or without significant caution in applying the throttle.

Normally aspirated all the way, Zetec is the way ahead and they're easier to find these days than Pintos are...

I have just completed the conversion from 4spd to 5spd on my dutton. The rear mount has to move back by 2 1/4 inches, the tailshaft on the 5spd is lower and may foul if the 4spd was close at the bottom behind the mount. The gear selector hole also moves back by about 1 1/2 inches - 2 inches. the box is slightly longer but it depends on the individual chassis design (engine mount position mainly) on whether you will need to alter the prop. I moved my engine forward by 1" and down by 2" and it has all gone in in a straight line both vertically and horizontally.
Best of luck, its a fiddly but worthwile conversion if you are happy welding bits up for mounts etc.

Benzo,

I did this conversion in my Dax Rush a few years ago. I changed from a 2.1 pinto to a cosworth YB and used the original Type 9 'box. It lasted without any problems at all until i changed to a Quaife HD Type 9 box later on. The lack of traction at the back wheels saves the gearbox from getting too much torque. If i remember correctly, even the Quaife 'box wasn't rated to take more than, i think, about 265bhp but the cosworth was doing about 300.

It a few hillclimbs and sprints in this configuration as well but i guess it depends how you drive the car.

cheers

Hi and thanks to all. Slight change of plan. Im going to keep the four speed box, renovate the 1600cc block, and rebuild the dhla forties and stg 3 head. Will use the seven for drifting at places like tramp drift. Im going to put the money saved towards an R1 powered MK developments 'speed R'. 400kg and an R1 engine should be a blast.

many thanks for taking the time out. Some great sounding cars.

cheers
