Hi everyone,

I am having a few problems with my hazard warning switch, so would appreciate some help. This is after I took it off to relocate elsewhere on dashboard, doh !!!

It is a push pull type, where you have a light down the centre of the switch. There are a total of 6 wires going to the switch.

At the back of the switch you have a circular ring of copper with one tag on it. As you pull the switch to turn it on, this tag makes contact with one of the wire terminals and completes the circuit. Three of the 5 terminals are set at a different distance from the other 2.

I'm not sure which terminal the tag is supposed to make contact with. Despite trying every different combination I can think of I still can't get it to work right.

The current state of play is:

when I pull the switch out (to turn it on), the indicators flash but the lamp within the switch does not, nor does the indicator light on the dash.
with the switch of, if I activate the normal steering column indicator switch they flash at twice the rate they should be.
the battery is getting drained very quickly.

Obviuously it's not right, but thought I should pass on as much info.

The colours of the wires going to the switch are:

green + red
green + white
black (this goes down the centre of the switch to the bulb)
green
green + grey
green + light pink

Before I took it of I did check which wire went to which terminal, but I'm obviously missing something and it's been a long day, it hasn't stopped raining and we came joint 3rd from last in Eurovision so I've had enough of this weekend.

Cheers, Jason

Hazards and wipers are the things that I find that people have problems with - I even have a professional mechanic ask me for advice from time to time on them.

Do you have numbers for any of the terminals? That can be the most useful thing you can provide!

Unfortunately, I don't think the colours are that useful (unless it's from an original wiring loom), but from memory what you'll have is:

- 1 wire for permanent +12v power (so the hazards can turn on with the ignition off) - terminal 30
- 1 wire for ignition +12v power (so the indicators don't work with the power off) - terminal 15
- 1 wire each for left and right indicators - terminals L and R
- 1 wire for the hazard unit - terminal 49/30b
- 1 wire for earth - terminal 31

That's the 6 wires - I'd guess black is the earth.

Page 176 of the Haynes Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems Manual has the details of a typical circuit - this is what I'm using as a reference.

Hi, thanks for the advice, pleased to say switch is all working OK now. That's one thing of my list, onto fitting the stereo I bought of ebay last week.

Cheers, Jason
