If you had £4k to spend on a second hand kit car, purely for b-raod blasts and the occasional track day, what would it be?

People seem to take a very dim view of the cheaper seven clones (principally thinking the Robin Hood there....) what should you get?

I bought a Marlin Roadster V8, goes well, cheap to purchase and easy to work on. Makes a change to all those 7's about.

for 4k you could buy my Tiger Cat E1 ;o)

Nothing wrong with it, I just fancy a change...

Anything designed by Jeremy Phillips, (Sylva) especially for track day use, just about all of them make excellent track cars especially the Leader, Striker, Pheonix plus of course the cars in their later incarnations (RAW striker / Fisher Fury etc etc)

Several Strikers on fleabay at the minute.. £4k should get you a nice crossflow powered car

I like the Jeremy Philips designs (my dad has a stylus....) but don't think my (hypothetical) budget would really stretch to a decent Stylus or Fury. Suppose a Striker would be a possibility.

There is a vague possibility of me getting something like this, plus a garage and a wet weather/load carrying runaround, but mostly I was just curious - seems the market takes off at about £7k, with no end of upper market seven clones, Fisher Furys, GTMs, G27s etc, but not a lot at lower prices.

Might take a pass on the Tiger just now, but I'll swap it for my Quantum if you really fancy a change wink

Hi Chris

I've just checked the list of 100 or so cars that I'd like to own, and sadly the Quantum isn't on there...yet...

Agree with the comments about the Sylva based cars. Lots of proven track ability.

Haha, damnit!

They are great cars (the 2+2s) but admittedly more of a fun everyday car than a track demon smile

You could get a Locost derived car for £4k easy, to be safe plump for one that has a pro built chassis (Stuart Taylor, MK etc) rather than a homebrew and you'll be fine, but a lot of home built chassis are fine as well (just need a trained eye to check).

There's one for sale on Locostbuilders here for under £3k, so a grand for upgrades!

I've actually got a Locost chassis at home I made as a uni project. Just don't have the time to build it up.

Free to a good home biggrin

Well there you go, you know how one should go together, and have a spare if you should have an introduction to the scenery!

I asked myself the same question last year. As luck would have it (although some may disagree) I did a search for Noble on ebay and a Midtec Spyder designed by Lee Noble was being auctioned.

I've got a pic in my profile if you fancy something a little different. Performance wise, most are 2L pinto in a car weighing little over half a ton so acceleration is pretty good. Having a space frame chasis and being mid engined makes for pretty good handling.

I've got a Renault lump in mine but i'd expect the Ford engine would be far easier to modify.

Someones got a right bargain there...

Apparently the Sylva Jester is being resurrected based on the Ford Ka. Claimed to cost £4k on the road and £5.5K built ready for the road (might be plus VAT). They were at Brands Hatch today but can't remember who it was.

Ok just found the page for a fully built Jester

http://www.stingraymotorsport.com/price_jester.htm...

£5.5k is pretty impressive (no VAT to add) so no doubt £4k for a home build is achievable

John,

I agree with you, this kit deserves a second chance, because it's all what a fun kit should be, inexpensive and cheerful, with the potential for tuning, and single donor...........the styling could do with an update though.....smile
