I'm looking for a RWD 'box which will handle 300ft/lbs.
Most people seem to quote the bhp it can handle, which seems a bit odd to me....

It also needs to be readily available (up to a point) and with a detachable bell housing.

Surely any modern Yank Tank gearbox will do the trick, then? Corvette breakers, perhaps?

I'm thinking its going to be a big lump.
Are T5s as thin on the ground as people are telling me?? THere are 2 on e-bay....

What weight car is it going in ?

Remember a lightweight car will put a lot less stress on the box, wheel spin usually comes before gearbox breakage.

T56 from Camaro etc (ask nicely and they'll leave the LS1/6/2 attached :-))

ideal choice:

but limits what you can connect it to,

alternatively, the supra box of the era shown below is super tough and dirt cheap, hell use the whole engine and box.

The T56 looks like the bellhousing might not be removable though, it looks like it may form part of the gearcase.

Toyota.

I can't remember which one though. However it needs to have the ball bearings replaced with roller bearings otherwise it won't last.

This gearbox used to be used in some cobra replicas and IIRC the Lotus Excel.

A bog standard LT77 should cope with 300 lb-ft OK I would have thought. Mine has seen up to 400 lb-ft and some fairly hard use without any problems other than worn synchros.
