I guess there are over 50 owners now, with 10-15 on the road.
Madabout is the best place for any info and build help.
A 1.8 turbo (I imagine K series) will be a rare one. Lots are building 1.6, 1.8vvc, 2.0 Turbo and Honda engined cars.
I was building a 1.6.
Was, because the engine is bu**ered and I'm contemplating a 1.8 now - depending on what I find & at what cost.

I don't know anyone fitting a VAG engine.
Mark Mathews (owner of Marlin) did at one time suggest he would offer free fitment of any new engine arrangements (as it gives them the ability to offer a fitting kit later), but I don't know if he is still doing that.
I reckon the VAG 1.8 turbo would be a great engine. I would probably look at 150 - 180bhp options unless you plan on spending 90% of your time on a track.
Get on Madabout & ask your questions there. You'll get plenty on help & advice.

Cheers for the response.I have looked at the website and had nosed around there before.I will be contacting the factory about a visit next week,as I want to see one close up and being that my mate lives in Crediton, seems a logical thing.I am toying with the TT 225 engine,as a friend is a Golf Audi nut and says they are a good power plant and cheap, probably cheaper than a type R.The only issue is an unknown fitment and more plumbing.I just need to clarify about age related plates rather than a Q.I know this has been covered before and info on Rover donor parts etc,as the factory never returned my mail.Seeems I need to get a Rover 200 bubble shaped car,but is there much difference between models,I.E bigger brakes on the sporty versions.Luckily my mate has a garage and is looking for a scrapper, preferably with a blown box or engine,as they are coming up for scrap value when damaged, maybe even a flooded car.....

I love the look of the 5EXI and reckon one would be fun to own and drive but.......I just couldn't bring myself to build a car called the 5EXI let alone admit that I drove a 5EXI.....
Dont badge it then, or call it a Marlin 5. Since when did 3 letters and a digit stop anyone getting what they wanted?? FFS man, get a grip on reality, its not like you are gonna go on Big Brother and tell the whole world. (It'd be embarrassing enough being on BB. . . )well.I went to the Factory.Met up with Mark. The wife likes it,sooooo,I've spoken to a mate who can sort a Rover Donor and will start with prepping all those bits before I then breath easy for the engine.I like the Golf Turbo and seeing that the factory race cars have room for intercoolers and the like,am going to go for the Type R version.I can at least pepp it a bit more with a supercharger when its going.I am making hasty decisions on spec and it will have doors as the wife is vertically challenged and my son is 4.Roll on chassis build.

Is this the same car that was made by strathcarron a while back?
Body is pretty much the same, but the chassis is Marlins own IIRC.I wasn't very impressed with the driveshaft arrangement on the T-series engined demonstrator when I first saw it, don't know if this has been improved though:
