My car passed its SVA in January, since then I've been wondering whether the information in the build manual is just a 'very' rough guide, It's a Sierra donor and all running gear is from that. It states that the best diff to use is the 3:9 or for more relaxed driving use the 3.62 but to avoid the 3.38 at all costs, on the few occasions I've been out in it the engine seemed to be revving quite fast for the speed i was doing, the donor is a 2ltr pinto with 4 speed auto g/box, the diff used for that is the 3.38, however I'm now using 15 inch rims with standard profile tyres so in theory it should be very slow off the mark but have a high top speed, Am i correct there ?
Now the problem is that according to the manufacturers build manual the gross weight of the car is 1250 kgs yet according to Haynes the Sierra weighs in between 1010-1145 kgs ? over a hundred kilos lighter !!!
so what do others think, Ideas please ?

Was the Donor EFI or foreign (originally)? That can change the standard diff ratio to 3.62.
A 3.38 would give you slower acceleration but a higher top speed (if the engine has enough torque).
If you do have a 3.38 you shouldn't have a problem swapping it for a 3.62, it took me ages to find a 3.38 to get the gearing right for the extra torque of a V8.

It was a carb model, 1985 English spec, the only real differences from the donor car are the wheel sizes and the weights between the two cars (donor and kit ) I just find it a bit hard to believe that the Sierra was lighter than the kit is, According to the paperwork that is.
The engine is a 2ltr pinto just reconditioned.
The gearbox is an automatic, just had a complete overhaul which 'should' handle the torque simply because it uses a torque converter, Please correct me if I'm wrong on that point.
I've got a 3.38 diff spare so if i really can't live with what i consider to be the wrong diff then I'll change it.
I'm not after quick 0-60 times just everyday driving like i have with my tintop, which is also auto.
