Seeing this http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/kitc...p?shownews=... in the news section of Madabout, really makes me wonder why they do it.

Don't get me wrong, this car looks amazing. I would love to have a kit that looked like this.

BUT why?

Why can't we bring it into the 21st century?
The body shape etc is lovely, but you need a Datsun 'Z' car for the donor. Not exactly available at every scrappie . . . .
I know where there is a 260Z for sale at the moment - £7995. These cars are appreciating now, not the sort of donor you rip apart eh?

Why couldn't they build a nice spaceframe and fit a modern V6 of something into it?

If you follow the links to OM Sportscars you will see that it would need more than a spaceframe. It's a body conversion using the centre section from the Z car.

OM Sportscars also claim to have some imported donor vehicles.

I'm not criticising the car, I just wish they would base it on a more modern donor.

I love it, just a shame it uses an almost unobtainable donor.

On the whole I'm no fan of replicas but where a glorious design exists but only a very few examples are available then I love it. E.g. GT40, Cobra, etc. Preferably when they are designed to go as fast - for example never saw the point of a Pinto engined Cobra...

It's a fair comment I think. Personally no matter how good it looks, I think I'd save myself the effort and just restore the donor - they are a classic in their own right! If they want to re-release it, as above do the job properly. Stick it on a space frame with new running gear. Afterall, if they have an original donor then the already have the bucks to take panel moulds for the "missing bits".

2/10 for re-release effort.

I was interested in getting a GTO replica before I bought my Noble P4 and did a lot of research - someone in the Z club mounted the centre tub of a Z on a DAX cobra chassis to go down a V8 route. Perhaps OM should look to splash a centre tub and then use an existing chassis such as DAX (as it appears to fit). Splashing a centre would allow them to sort the door height as well.

Unfortunately OM seem to be pricing the car out of the market and also can't currently supply all the items neede to build - there are members of the Hybrid Z club in the States desparate to get parts for their GTO replicas and getting no respone from Oliver at OM. The door locks are rocking horse ***t! When the project was owned by Scorpion the prices were far more realistic.

For the prices now being asked I'd expect the 4 inch shortfall in wheelbase to be sorted and more acurate nose and rear, in particular the wrap of rear sreen into the sides of rear pillars.

Look out for Michelle's BMW V12 engined GTO with 4 inch stretch correct wheelbase - think there's some clips on youtube. It sounds and looks awesome!!

Like this you mean? wink

Sorry Italo, but I think sticking bits on an MX5 to try and make it look like a 250GTO is as naff as sticking bits on an MR2 to try and make it look like a 355.

If they really want to do the job properly they need a dimensionally accurate (or near as) body over a bespoke chassis. With a V12 under the bonnet. smile
