I'm hopefully collecting a new toy next weekend, to add to the collection. biggrin

I've never bothered with trackday insurance on my Sylva, since at £4.5K or so in value, it's cheap enough to be expendible, but the latest addition to the fleet would hurt my wallet a bit more if I ran it into the armco...

I know that HIC used to include track day cover with their policies, but does anyone know of other kit-car insurers who will provide track cover either within the main policy or as an add-on at reasonable cost?

HIC / Herts still do cover for trackdays as part of the policy I think

Not sure if they're generally competitive or not though

Thanks, Locoblade.

I tried HIC, who transferred my call a couple of times (including, worryingly, one that answered the phone as Adrian Flux Isurance, who I wouldn't want anything to do with - are they part of the same group?), before saying that they didn't do track cover.

They gave me the number for Competition Car Insurance, however, who sorted me out very competently and quickly. Road risk cover includes 4 track days per year at 10% of car's value as an excess, for about £135 more than the best quote I had for road risk only, which seems pretty reasonable.

I have been informed by others that a common thing that is done at a track day if you crash your car is to tow the car away on a trailer and replace the car on a public road, hence you are then covered by the insurance. I must stress that I am not condoning this sort of action but have been told that this sort of thing has been done in the past.

Yes, this is a well known scam. So much so that it is rumoured that insurers use 'bounty hunters' to take photos of accidents at track days so that when a car with that registration or a similar description tries to make a claim, not only is the claim rejected, but the claimant ends up in court on fraud charges.

...and since the car I am getting may be one of only 3 in left in this country, it would be a bit difficult to explain the 'coincidence' of an accident even if I swapped the plates for track use! smile

For the sake of a couple of hundred quid a year, I'd rather not take the risk of a prison sentence and a record that would prevent me ever being legally accepted for motor insurance again... judge
