Hello i have a Fisher fury with a ford 1700 crossflow twin 40 webbers etc , i would like to upgrade the engine to a 2 ltr zetec to get some more power and a little smoother would not go a miss (a newer / modern engine) .
although I did not build the car but i have a full list of all the parts in fact i have full build diary eg siera type 9 gearbox escort back axel etc
my problem is that i do not know what zetec is best im told pre cat would be the best choice , is that correct ? if so what year or best doner car
also how much better would a zetec be if at all and how difficult to fit in the fury
any thoughts anyone

Hi
I have a 2L zetec in my Stylus. I cant comment on the difference from your old engine. Mine is a standard early Mondeo (silver top)with 176bhp. Running injection.
The later units have apaprently got veriable valve timing. Connect a switch to it & operate manualy or connect to management for out operation. I afraid I dont know what unit this is or if the heads are interchangable.
Good luck

I've not done this, and I'm going on things I've heard (so best get it checked out first!)
I believe that you should be able to run the Zetec on carbs - however, I think the zetec is a taller engine overall than the crossflow, so how difficult it'll be will depend on how much space you have (if this is the case).
You may find that the type9 may not be up to some of the larger zetec engines.

You can run a Zetec on carbs. Assuming your car has already been sva'd and registered, then if you don't need to run a cat at the moment, you shouldn't need to even if you change the engine for something modern, as I understand it. If you can, I think a Blacktop Zetec is the one to go for, although it may be a slightly harder install due to the waterpump and engine mount.
I have a 2L zetec (silver top, from April 1994) in my Tiger, with twin 45s + Weber alpha system. It's got a type-9 box on the back (as most Seven replicas do) and it seems strong enough, certainly for a standard 2L engine. It was measured at just under 150bhp on the rolling road. I think PPCs article on the type 9 said that about 200bhp was the limit for that gearbox as standard.
If you need any specific dimensions just ask, it's easy enough to measure in a kit car.
It would be worth checking whether an engine made after a certain date would mean different emissions tests at the MOT, meaning you may need a catalytic converter or more advanced fueling system than carbs on a newer engine.
Lots of Zetec info here, in the Zetec resources section : http://www.zetec-cat.co.uk/

A standard 2 litre should have about 130-150 bhp or so once fitted in a kit car (dependant upon exhaust/induction etc). The 170 bhp version was the VVC type fitted to the Focus ST170. Since you're car is already SVA'd, you should be tested to the same emissions levels as before. Otherwise, it's not a difficult swap, and one done quite regularly to kit cars.
