Hi,

Does anyone here use a Stylus or Fury everyday? I just wondered how durable they are and if the weather protection was up to all-year use? Any major design problems?

Thinking about buying myself one in the spring - if nothing else, just to piss off my dad who's been building a Stylus for about 7 years and still not finished! biggrin

I used to have a stylus and to be honest it would be tough to use everyday, i know hard tops are available for both. When the hard top is fitted they arnt easy to get in!!! so i would say no

What were your objections to it?

In theory it shouldn't be any worse than an MX5 or S2000, surely?

(not arguing - just wonder what I might have missed!)

Can you get a usable pram hood for them? Basically my two criteria would be reasonable reliability/durability over a decent annual mileage (largely down to donor parts I grant you...) and the ability to leave it outside work for 8 hours and get an unexpected thunderstorm without coming back to a huge puddle. As long as it's dry and it starts I'm not looking for oppulent luxury. The competition is a TVR S-Series or Wedge basically.

No real objections.

The stylus would be better imo as it has a useable boot. I had a double duck hood on mine and it did leak if the rain was excessive. If i left the car for a while in the rain i did indeed come back to a puddle in the footwell and on the seat. The heater was then not up to the job of demisting the screen etc. I would look at a Murtaya if i was planning it now, 4 wheel drive, loads power, hard/soft top, air con etc etc much better than any sevenesque car.

I've got a Fury, fantastic car as a toy but personally I wouldn't use it everyday not only because I dont have a windscreen, but also because it always demands 100% concentration. In an ideal world that wouldn't matter, but unfortunately there are times when I do a 14hr day then drive back; in the Seat I doesn't matter to the same degree if I fail to spot that wet manhole cover etc. whereas it could present a problem in the Fury. That point depends on your useage I suppose.

Also, if you are going to use it everyday get a CEC version not a BEC; my fireblade engined car is fantastic for hooning but it would be very tiresome to use everyday.

I ran an RT with a pram hood for a while this summer(or not)mine did leak but no more than my old Griff, reliabiity was not a problem(ok i blew it up on a track day)as long as the electrics are put together properly, i have fibreglass seats so i just drilled a few holes in them to let the water out, no heater either i wanted to keep weight to a minimum, most of them run Ford or VX lumps so have been proven, as for the competition it will run rings round either.
Would i use one all year round no freekin chance, but its only a toy and i wouldn't have run either of my TVR's all year either.

Any news on that secret new replacement engine you were talking about at Llandow?

yes If I had the cash and somewhere to build one I'd be in like a shot - the Murtaya sounds like an incredible bit of kit.

The thing is basically I have a 'sensible car' that I use 95% of the time and a fun car (Sylva Leader) which goes out for about 5% of the time. Like Hugh's Fury it has no doors, no windscreen etc. and this means I can't really drive it to work and risk an unexpected thunderstorm whilst I'm in doors. I'd like a replacment - not as an only car - but one that I can use maybe 75% of the time and keep the sensible car for trips to the tip and so on.

Can you think of any other kits that would be suitable? I've already had a Quantum and I'd prefer something rather more focused and a bit quicker. To be honest the main contender at the moment is something like a TVR S-Series. A Libra would be a little more than I think I'd like to spend and I do quite like open motoring. I suppose an Elise would be a possibilty, but even that seems a little too obvious!

You'll find a decent Libra for less money than a decent Elises these days...

ETA And the roof panel comes off and stows behind the seats.

Hmm, maybe a Libra would be a better idea scratchchin

About £8k seems to be the going rate for a decent 4 pot - a little more than I'd anticipated spending, but it's a possibility.

Are they a better everyday proposition then?

Must admit I never knew the roof panel was dettachable - what's the point of having a seperate Spyder?

Libras (except ...see below) are good cars, lotus elises are ok but well over rated imo.

Anything with a k series engine imo needs to be avoided!!! I had one in my Lotus and it was horrid, i wont bore you with the details.

I would save/borrow/steal to get a Murtaya!! I think they are the best thing to come out of the Kit scene for a long long time. Speak to Neil(nice chap) at Adrenaline and watch the videos on you tube.

Sometimes you get lucky with the K-series. I drove mine for about 20,000 miles without any problems at all. Trouble is, you don't know if you've got a good one or not until it's too late!

yep you are right they cant all be that bad!! but when i opened it up for the 3rd head gasket i was appauled at the quality of the castings etc etc

Adam, how good do you think the Murtaya is?? i feel it is the best thing to come out of the kit car scene for a lomg time!! GREAT WORK with the new mag buddy!! I have resubscribed for the first time in 7 years, as im sure many others have.

I'm afraid £8k for a Libra is pushing it a bit. It'll be a long time before I could spare £20k for a Murtaya and enough time and space to build my own, but I wholeheartedly agree with you, I think it's one of the best kits for a long time.

Anyway...

I got the impression the K-Series was ok if you stuck a Landrover gasket on? Before getting my (KV6 powered) ZS I looked at a couple of ZR 160s with K-series I4s in and they seemed to go well.

BTW what are you driving at the moment Adam? I'll have to get over to that meet at Springfield some time.

The experiences i have had have all been bad

i had the head skimmed and the block after the head gasket went for the 2nd time and it went again!!!! I tried a landrover one and expensive aftermarket anti failure ones all to no avail!!

avoid ... imo

but as adam says you may get lucky??

what about ginettas??? they did a nice one i think it was a G31 or G32 with 2 seats, a mate of mine had one it was good and he used it all year. They are a bit old now ie technically i suppose, but cheap to run and repair.

It's a sad state of affairs, but I still haven't driven a Murtaya! Once our project car hits the road I'll address that! Having been a passenger at Brands Hatch, though, I can say its performance is very impressive. Can't wait to have a go of ours.

Thanks for your comments on the mag, too. Glad yo hear you've subscribed smile

At the moment, I'm driving a Toyota MR2 Roadster. The Riot should be on the road in January if I pull my finger out over Christmas - I'll take it to the Springfield meet as soon as it's registered.
