Single seaters with SVA
Discussion
Guys,
I have just seen the roadrunner racing sprint R and have seen it has an SVA version, anyone know if this could be done to Tiger racing ERA single seater. Not actually interested in doing serious mileage, just like the idea of one as a trackday car but at least being able to take it for a quick shakedown drive between trackdays. Any other SVA single seaters out there?
Cheers

Take a look at my car on my profile or the website www.furorecars.co.uk you will see it is perfectly possible to register & use on the road a single seater (tho' mine is actually a 2 seater in tandem) it started life as a Formula Ford 2000, I now manufacture something very similar as a kitcar. I've always thought it would be possible to get an ERA road legal, tho' to the best of my knowledge no-one has done it.
Yes lights are a very definite requirement for SVA, but once registered they are not all a legal requirement as you can have a "daylight MoT". An MoT is not required for the first 3 years from registration of any kitcar build, whether from new or second hand parts.HTH
If you ever get an ERA, or similar, on the road do let me know - there is (or was) another single seater kitcar for the track around called something like a Typhoon or Tornado, looked a bit further on down the F1 evolutionary chain than the ERA, reminded me of a '70's honda or possibly Lola.
I also know of someone who is getting a genuine Formula 3000 (carbon fibre tub)on the road using a Cossie lump with a transaxle - should be fairly spectacular!

Unsure on that about no MOT as my Lambo Replica went through SVA correctly using s/h parts, but it required MOT every year, no 3 years grace Edited by Russ Bost on Sunday 9th December 20:02
Yes, so did mine, but only because the DVLA c*cked up. It has, I believe, now been clarified that MoT is not a requirement for 3 years, however if you did go for an MoT & the car is then on the computer, you will be asked for MoT each year thereafter! Also I have a feeling that you can't renew car tax online without going & getting an MoT, however no problem if you go & present your docs manually! It's been discussed at some length on the Locostbuilders site & this would appear to be the general consensus.
"Whats the odds on getting an old FFord or Formula First road legal? Would the suspension ect be up for it?"
Lee, that's precisely what mine started life as, a FF2000. It's still on the original rose jointed suspension, but much, much, modified. One of the big probs is that the FF was designed with about 25mm of ground clearance & even on full droop you have only about 50mm, I gave myself further problems in that I wanted to raise the nose in the current F1 style which makes the prob even worse, the trouble is that you simply run out of travel & all the angles "go wrong" in the end I had to go for larger wheels to get enough clearance (I'm on 245 & 285 x 18's). The end result is excellent, but if I were doing it again given that there are a couple of single seat kits that are at least semi roadgoing/SVA'able & my kit which is a tandem 2 seater & designed with the road in mind as well as the track I know which route I'd be using.
There are other probs with using a race car as well, such as collapsible steering col an SVA requirement, loom, switchgear, mountings for cycle wings, all sorts of nasty sharp edges which Mr SVA won't like, light mountings etc etc. When I built mine there were no kits available, now there are it's got to be the easier choice & probably cheaper by the time you've taken all the above into account.
