I think there was an amnesty period with the DVLA several years ago where cars that were incorrectly registered like this could be amended to make the car type / description correct without any penalty or any additional test etc, but I believe that period has now passed. Im not sure how the insurance company or the plod would look at it now if you had a crash etc.

Simple, the owner is a good friend of the MOT inspector. No other reason.
A case of "Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more....."

A shame really as the car looks quite nice.

If it was built in the 80's then it would have just needed an MOT and away you went on the donor V5/reg plate. There was nothing like the SVA and subsequent registration process back then, you just turned up at an MOT centre with your home built special/kit car/what ever you wanted and if Mr MOT said yes, off you went. The SVA was brought in to try and remove some of the dubiousness of that system. As said, a friendly MOT man could put any old toss on the road if slipped a few bob. Also, there's no guarantee an MOT tester will know much about the rigidity of a certain space frame/monocoque or harness mount set up. Equally though, he wouldn't care, and neither would you, if you had a slightly sharp edge in the cockpit, whilst Mr SVA will. Many good things, but also a few silly ones came about with the SVA.

That car is not legal as it stands, and the process of making legal will include an SVA test.

yes

Would you fancy your chances of putting that car through an SVA?

Not sure I would.

Interesting to see on the photos that the tax disc displayed do age those photos somewhat.... I wonder why?

The NG has been around for quite a few years so could legimately show as MGB on the V5 as their was a long period where this wasn't an issue.

Also the NG kit carried on after SVA tests came in so with a few changes wouldn't be impossible to get through, unlike some pre-SVA stuff which is very hard work.

What I have never understood is why some people didn't take advantage of the amnesty period - I thought it was publicised enough for those who had an interest/investment in Kit Cars?

No, indeed I wouldn't, and that was sort of the exquisitely subtle point I was making.

The very funny thing is, though, that that is almost excatly what I shall be doing in the next few weeks. Not that particular NG but another pre SVA TC which became an abandoned project 10 years ago.

I'm fairly confident, but will know more when I've had a chance to examine it thoroughly (the owner is bringing it to my workshop later this week)

I went through 6 months of DVLA with my pre-lit westie with correct documentation( had been on the road as a westie for 6 years by this point).I even ran out of tax disc waiting for them to sort out the issues.I had 2 inspections by them (although one they never even showed up to the carpark we were supposed to meet) and after too many phonecalls and me threatening to drive the car, even without a tax disc, they eventually relented and changed it from an escort as per the docs to a wesie and I kept the age related number plate.
