Steering Wheel Problem!
Discussion
Hello all,
I'm new on this site as well as being new to kit cars so please excuse any naivety and/or stupid questions!
I want to buy a used 7-type car and recently tried sitting in a Tiger Avon. Nice car (if a little heavy at 950kg) but I could not safely drive it as the bottom of the steering wheel fouled on my knees. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the steering wheel height on the Tiger Avon and a factory built Tiger Super 6 as I don't want to waste my time, and that of the seller if the same problem will present itself? I am 6ft 4in and 16-odd stone so I'm not waif. Are there any cars out there with adjustable steering columns?
Cheers,
Ant

950kg?????? JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESUS! What did he panel it with, lead?
That cannot be right surely? If it is, save some money and buy a 2.0 Sierra, throw the carpets and trim out and you will get the same adrenalin rush. A 7 esq should be between 400 and 650kgs, they are about the two extremes. Most are somewhere in the middle.
Seriously, i do not know any 7'esq with adjustible column. But should be possible to modify and lift column by means of a new bracket near the dashboard. And a smaller wheel. There is no need for a wheel diameter of more than 300 - 330mm for a light car. But that is NOT a light car.....

Thanks for your reply.
I know what you mean about the weight and I had to double check it. It was on the plate in the engine bay and one of the MOT or SVA forms the chap had with the car - front axle 450kg, rear 500kg!!
I assume that if I changed the steering column bracket on one already built then I'd possible have to change the dashboard to acommodate this?

Mine says roughly the same on the plate. I remember from my SVA that with me in it it weighed 720kg, therefore my car weighs 630kg wet.
i had the same problem with the wheel and my left leg when turning corners/trying to correct a slide. I have long legs and short arms so had a friend machine a 50mm spacer to bring the wheel closer to me (and hence avoiding my knees) and also bought a smaller wheel - 265mm diameter. If the car s dashboard is anything like my westfields .ie. a piece of covered aluminium, then it should be easy to make up a spacer and adjust the dash.
