Are escort & Cortina uprights the same pattern?

I need to replace my bearings & carry out some upgrades (brakes ect). I see a lot of items are interchangable, but Im not sure.

Also unsure of the wheel stud thread - 12mm or 7/16 UNF.

On a 98 Stylus.

Thanks

This thread might help with regards to wheel bearings.

The uprights themselves are completely different, the Escort used McPherson struts which some kits (Sylva, Dutton etc) used in a modified form for a double wishbone upright.

Brake calipers are the same (Ford M16).

yes the Escort is a MacPherson Strut (so top of upright houses the strut assembly), whereas the Cortina is double wishbone (so top of upright connects to a ball joint on the end of the top wishbone).

Ford being Ford, you might find thats some components (eg. calipers) use similar dimensions/mountings, so are interchangeable, though.

Thanks for replies.

My installation is a double wishbone. So if it is an Escort part the top of the strut must be removable?

Its just that I cant find replacement (aftermarket) Escort units, but I can find several different people making Cortina & Sierra items. Their must be a lot more Escorts than Cortinas on the road, so if anything I should find plenty of the Escort units.

Perhaps mine isnt Ford. But Ford wheels & brakes do fit.

Thanks again.

I assume you're asking about the Stylus shown on your profile pic? The Escort upright is factory modifed where it's fitted to the rocker arm wishbone front suspension on Sylvas and their derivatives.

I believe that the front strut/upright assembly is the same on some Capris, but in any event, you shouldn't have too much difficulty sourcing a new one. There are plenty of classic Ford specialists around... do a search on Google or buy a copy of 'Classic Ford' magazine and you should find a selection of companies (eg. Speedshack who break them.

Seems I may have Capri units. The Capri & Escort (mk2 at least) may be the same.

I am pretty sure the Capri ones are the same/very similar to the Escort ones, except that the steering arm is removable / replacable so it has been very sought after for years by the Hot Rod community where they regularly hit concrete walls.
