Hi

I was hoping some kind person could confirm which clutch to use when running a 1600 xflow and type 9 5 speed box? It currently has a 20 spline clutch, from a cortina i think! I've read snippets of info and it seems a 23 spline sierra cluth works better...is this true?

Cheers

It's not a case of working better, the Type 9 has a 1 inch 23 spline input shaft so a 20 spline plat simply won't fit. Therefore if you do have a 20 spline clutch plate fitted, you don't have a Type 9 box mated to it!

I counted wrong it's actually an 18 finger clutch! The box is a type 9 box for sure and it has 1" shaft! No i'm even more confused!

The number of fingers is irrelevant really, the important parameters are the overall diameter of the friction plate (can't be any larger than the pressure plate), and the size of the shaft and number of splines it's designed for. IIRC the plate used for putting a Type 9 on a Crossflow is that from a 1.6L OHC Sierra (i.e,. Pinto engine), the 2.0L clutch has too large a diameter.

My lack of mechanical knowledge is showing. To know confirm, the clutch is a 190mmDia, 23 spline x 1". The cover plate has 18 fingers being the flat type. Can anyone i.d that type of clutch?

I rang Burtons. They told me what I needed. It was an AP plate. I think it's CP2257-9 in their catalogue.

Just looking through Locostbuilders archives, the early 1600 OHC Sierra clutch plate is the one you need, it's 190mm with 23 spline center.
