Hi everyone,

Question. I want to make an Ferrari F355 Targa replica out of a Toyota MR2. Can anyone tell me if the T-Bar in the MR2 can be removed without further strenghtening the car or is it an important part for the structure of the car?

Thanks!

As the Veranti chop the complete roof of a donor MR2 for their conversion I would say the the T-Bar can be removed. Have a look at this

Thanks for that, it would indeed indicate that it can be done without reinforcement and they do sell a reinforcement package as well. Bit of a contradiction there but hey.

There was a small number (91) of Mk2 Spiders made by a subsidiary of Toyota, they had quite a bit of additional chassis stiffening.

The T bar cars were already noticeably less stiff than the ones with a full roof (and much leakier!), so I would expect removing the T bar would have a significant impact on rigidity (and safety).

Thanks for that Mike,

It confirms the suspicions I already had. That bar isn't there just to make it possible to split the roof in half and carry that around in the trunk. Do you know if there are detailed pictures to be found of these Toyota Spiders with extra strenghtening. I would be interested to learn how that was done.

Kind regards,

Hi Theo, (You wont recognise the name but its Garry Diablo Roadster)
The mr2 T bar is removable but they have 2 strengthening bars added underneath, im lead to believe there are holes already in the chassis for these 2 support bars to be bolted in, unfortunatly im also informed the bars are no longer available from Toyota and this is 1 reason why the Veranti stopped being available.
any more info mate give me a call

At the risk of sounding pompous and uppity, did you really think that was the reason it had a T-Bar?
