in a year!

took the car to rockingham today. Still a bit of a shake down as i only finished putting her together at 9 oclock last night but getting there. Spent the morning tweaking what i could. Still need stiffer anti roll bar(s) but that will come.

The car performed really well everywhere else. Water temps never more than 86 degrees and oil temps never more than 95 which is great for a rotary on track. Brakes work a treat and the front tyres have sooo much grip!

really happy with the way car is performing now i have some traction. The car has come out looking how i wanted also, white is the new black!

492 bhp per ton and 508 ftlbs per ton at 6psi boost. Still in the early stages with the power so that will increase.

a few pics from the day

My cousin Dave driving, many thanks to him and all the other that have helped with the car

thanks guys, the car is a stylus, i bought it as just a shell/chassis with no engine, gearbox, whees, interior, axles, suspension brakes etc. I stripped it a bit further and replaced the loom, refitted the interior and fitted a 13b turbo rotary engine and gearbox from a Mazda RX7. The rest of the car is a bit of a Bitsa. It has wider rear wings and a Atlas LSD Axle which is wider than the original English that the car used to have. Cosworth rear disc conversion, 4 pot Hi Specs on the front and everything else is custon made. dynoed at 320 bhp and 330 ftlbs at 6psi of boost. Just needs a slightly bigger turbo as the stock one is too small for the streetported engine i built and it wont create any more boost.

I know rotary engines, now i just have to learn about suspension settings smile

I've heard that rotary engines are rather noisy; did you have any problems with the noise meter?

Sounds (haha) very interesting, how heavy is the engine, and have you any pictures of the oily bits?

they can be noisy, especialy if they are not turbo charged. I have had RX7s for years and getting a sensible noise level is a challenge. Part of the reason i bought a car that had alredy been registered so no SVA, just an MOT which is easy.

You can see the extra silencer accross the back of the engine bay which helps cooling and reduces the noise. I havent measure mine but its well under the usual track day limit. I would say about 95db at a guess.

this is the most uptodate pic of the 'oily bits' a bare block weighs about 75kgs, i reckon about 120 with everything added. The gearbox is about the same as a ford. The engines are very small so sit low and far back

Do you get decent airflow across the entire intercooler?

Any video of it in action?

the ecu controller shows air temps at the throttle body and its never more than 10 degrees above ambient, but usually about 5- 6 degrees above. Here is a piccy of the ducting, you can see the whole i/c is getting air, the angle of the opening promotes the air to go into the bigger space in front of the i/c, well thats the theory.

I dont like Front mounts as they restrict the rad too much and i couldnt do a V mount, the car already had the top hole so i just made use of it and ducted the 2 seperate air flows, 1 to the rad and 1 to the i/c. The bonnet vent feeds the air filter and the 2 black vents, vent the exhaust heat, again all these holes were already there. I didnt cut new ones, just made use of what was there already.

Ahhh I see how you get air to it now!

Did you consider a water-to-air intercooler? Though if your seeing intake temps not far off ambient as it is its just added complexity.

I have always wondered why rotaires are not more popular in kit cars. They are cheap to buy and build for power and the fuel use and occasional oil top up should be no real issue to a kit builder. The power delivery is ideal in a lightweight car to.
I guess its the amount of BS surrounding them on the net that puts people off frown

The car looks absolutely fantastic in black and white!!

there is a lot of BS about rotaries. They are really good strong engines if set up and maintained correctly. They are sensitive to changes so as long its dynoed correctly and monitored you wont have any problems but then i have had them for over 15 years now.

No point haveing a charge cooler, they are no better/more efficient than a well placed i/c and mean more weight.

I love that car. I've never been keen on white but that works so well, especially with the "black pack". Stunning in fact.

Rotaries are a bit of a marmite engine. Without a turbo they sound quite uncomfortably harsh but with a turbo they sound like KITT - fabulous. I really like that, and the engine is so far back too.

Got any close-up pics of the dash? You've some interesting-looking screens there.

this is the only other picture of the dash, the centre digi screen is the controller/display for the Ecu. Its a Microtec after market standalone ecu. The one in front of the steering wheel is the digi speedo and also tells me eveything else, ie water temp, lights, indicators, handbrake, brake fluid etc..Its a Koso one.

Thanks for the comments

regards
Tony
