Right, I’m in the process of buying a new car and am currently thinking about buying something pretty boring as a ‘decent’ car, nice but nothing something that will cost the earth to run.

But, I am also now thinking of having a toy/kit car, thinking a MEV rocket, would love an atom but can’t really afford one, but would consider a Westfield or similar.

Basically, I have a mkII golf GTi 8v which I use currently. The car runs well although the seals are shot, so gets a bit wet inside (nice in the winter), needs a new clutch and discs.
Therefore, I was thinking, is this a worthy donor car. I would probs have to re-build the engine as it’s done 140,000 miles and has probs lost a fair bit power.

IS it worth it or are there better routes, ie, sell the golf and buy something better.

Its probably better to choose what kit you want to drive, rather than what kit you can get to fit your Golf bits, and if the Golf needs work too...

As with the Honda 16v twin cam thread here - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... , the Golf is a front engine fwd car, it would probably be a *&%$£ to get it into a front engine rear drive kit like a 7 replica, so your limited to front engine fwd as it is now, or mid engine rwd like a Riot, 5exi etc. if they do the engine mounts and frame to fit a Golf motor.

Sell the Golf, choose your kit, then buy your suitable donor! There was an INCREDIBLE GTM concept car built a few years back with a Golf GTI engine in the back. It did 0-60 in 3 seconds apparently. I think Ferg ordered one, a snip at £50k. I am sure he will tell you all about that one ;-) Not sure where that car is now....
