VIC Check before or after I make the car?!
Discussion
Hi All, 1 st, just looking at getting a donor from a scrap yard which doesn't have the V5. I've been told that the vehicle needs a VIC check in order to get the logbook but because i'm using the donor floor and all running gear do I need a VIC check after I have done the kit or before? Do i need a VIC check to get the log book first or do I need to fix the damaged car first?
2nd, Can I take a damaged car for a VIC check and apply for the logbook and then change modify the car and send the logbook off again after? Will a damaged vehicle pass a VIC Check? Questions questions, all these questions!! Any help greatly appreciated..

Is your build going to claim the chassis/body as the fundamental identity of the car or is there a chassis as part of the kit?
When you talk about using the floor I shall assume the former.
Again referring to the use of the floor infers you are going to chop up the monocoque body in which case it is a modified body and will need a new VIN allocated by DVLA. If you use enough bits from the donor then you may get an age related plate.
In both cases I would say you must get the donor onto a V5. If it does not have one then you will need to trailer the wreck to the test centre. They are only interested in identifying the bits based on chassis VIN stamps and VIN plates along with engine numbers etc. so as long as they can find those then I seen no reason why it cannot be VICd. If it is very wrecked they may claim it is not safe for them to work on. Talk to the test centre and explain what you want to do.
Last question, why does the scrap yard not have the V5?

Hi Steve, many thanks for your reply.. The kit I was looking at involves using the whole floor/engine/suspension of the car and takes away the roof including windscreen. Does a scrap yard usually retain the V5 even if it is there with a dented front wing/bonnet etc? I thought they had to send them off straight away.. Thanks for the info, getting everso closer in understanding the loops you have to go through.. Kind Regards..

I would expect them to retain it until they had actually scrapped the car. Up until that point there is still a chance of selling the whole car....to you. When I scrapped a donor they wanted to know exactly how and when it was scrapped but seemed happy with pictures of it chopped up in a skip.
Don't forget when you start your build take lots of photos as VOSA will want to see them and be convinced of your amateur build status so plenty of domestic scenes and not commercial looking background.
