Mk2 Cortina disks on my JZR, upgrade ideas?
Discussion
Hi all,
I have a JZR kitcar which has Mk2 Cortina disks and calipers, They have been painted blue at some point and are looking a bit crappy at the moment so im looking to change them. Not so botherd about more stopping power as they lock the fronts pretty darn fast as it is, even more so in the rain!
Iv been doing some scouting for a few weeks but cant seem to come up with any leeds apart from some poor looking ebay items that id rather stay away from.....
So, on a budget. Can anybody suggest a place to start? Im thinking drilled disks and stripped refreshed calipers with a lick of decent paint, or maybe even new ones if the price is right.
Cheers!

I have a Skunk, similar weight to the JZR at around 360Kg.
On the front I have a couple of custom 300mm rotors and Willwood foating 2 pot motorcycle calipers.
The rotors cost around £90 each and the calipers about the same. Not exactly a cheap option.
However: On a light car like a JZR, you do not need heavy ventilated disks. Neither do you need heavy calipers. These heavy parts add to the unsprung weight and will be detrimental to handling. If upgrading the braking system, you should aim to minimise weight.
For alternatives from the scrap yard, look at (original) mini calipers and disks from the rear of cars (since these are usually not ventilated).
Finally, you may like to increase the piston diameter on the calipers, or decrease the diameter at the pedal end. Doing so will give a greater pedal travel, and more "feel" to your braking system before you lock up. Don't forget to re-adjust the front/rear bias when you are done though. Locking the rear first is not a pleasant experience in a three wheeler!
Hope that helps.

One of the more affordable brake upgrades for cortina Mk 2 - Mk5 hubs brakes is as follows:
Use Capri 2.8i / Escort RS2000 vented discs , and 4 pot billet aluminium Bremsport calipers - I got my calipers for ~ £80 each (4yrs ago) from TAS (Trans Auto Sports) of Preston : they are M16 caliper upgrade kits which they had commissioned from Bremsport for Westfield I am told, but TAS / Bremsport were only willing to do so if they could also market as M16 4 pot upgrade kits as well as supplying Westfield (to make them in bigger quantities and this keep the prices more affordable). They stop my 4.6ltr V8 dax rush very well (on road and track).
