MK INDY R HAYABUSA Performance
Discussion
Just bought an INDY R with a Hayabusa engine. (Not picked it up yet though)
Does anybody know the acceleration of one of these cars over a quarter mile.? I'm assuming they top out before the end of a 1/4 mile run. It has a cosworth LSD but i dont know the ratio.....
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Cheers
John.

This was pretty accurate for my Megablade, giving the exact same 0-60 as quoted by Westfield.
Putting in 180bhp and 460kg (as a guess) gives:
397 bhp/ton
0-60 - 3.51s
0-100 - 9.37s
Quarter mile - 11.93s @ 112.85mph (so should be able to do it without topping out)
This is handy for working out gearing and top speed:

Mine has a 3.62 LSD from an XR4x4 I think, I think the Cosworth ones are the same ratio?

What I meant by top out was "would it would reach it's top speed before the end of the 1/4 mile".
Thanks for the spreadsheets they are good for working out the speeds. I cant help but think that the 1/4 mile times would be quicker than 12.8-13.4 seconds. I had an old escort cosworth a few years back which was 330BHP but was heavy in comparison to a BEC and that managed a quarter in 13.9 so going on this theory surely it will be quicker than 13.4secs. This is only my guess or is it harder than it looks to get a good launch in one of these cars?????

Yep BEC's are not really made for drag racing. They do there damage on track where they destroy many other expensive hi powered cars.
I dont think it would reach its top speed on the quarter mile and they are not the easiest of cars to to get of the the line.
You wont worry about the braggin rights of the quarter mile times when you let it loose.

A MK Indy R with a busa lump in would weigh in at around 520kg's,and thats with a few light weight bits fitted. With some sticky tyres like toyo R888,your 1/4 mile time would be at best,12.2 and a terminal speed of 110 mph,as they start to run out of steam after 80mph,due to low torque, and poor aero.
But thats not what these cars are all about, they are about quick lap times,a well driven busa Indy will lap Cadwell park in around 1 minute 40 seconds,Oulton Park International circuit in around 1 minute 55 seconds,so get in on track and enjoy.

if you have never driven a BEC, it will take some getting used to launching it but be prepared to break things if you have sticky rubber. BEC's tend to have a bit of an off clutch which means you either bog down or wheel spin. As said above, if your not going on track and just want quick drag times then a CEC maybe a better choice. If you want the best of both worlds, buy an REC Thanks for the spreadsheets they are good for working out the speeds. 1/4 is all about the launch, in a 4x4 cossie you have a serious advantage with traction
There is a guy with an R1 turbo engine who i think has dragged his a few times and his best is 12.1.
If you have it by march 21st a few of us are going to the Pod for a RWYB so you will know for sure.

Sorry for the Naivety but whats CEC and REC (Car and Rocket??? lol)
I should have picked the car up by then. I'm waiting on the SVA to be done and then i can go and pick it up!!! Dont think i will take it straight to the drag strip though as i need to learn how to drive it a little bit before i go and make a right TW*T out of meself. It's only got cheapo no grip tyres on it at the moment so i think i will learn a little with them and then get some sticky Toyo's. I'm not just after quick drag times but i just wanted to know what the straighline performance was like from other owners with similar cars.

Definitely true for some bike engines but less so for a Busa - the reason people pay a premium for a Hayabusa engine is because although it only has similar power to the modern litre bike engines it has (relatively) huge low down grunt. I've never managed to bog mine down and have no illusions that it's down to skill! Dumping the clutch with any sensible revs on results in instant wheelspin, how quick you get away depends on how good you are at managing that. I'm running Yoko A048s, pretty sticky.Weights got mentioned earlier in the thread and I agree 450kg is optimistic for a Busa engined Indy, when we weighted all the RGB cars last season my Fury was the lightest class A car (>1000cc) at 501kg wet. That's with a lightweight race chassis and lightweight (i.e. flimsy!) bodywork.
A pre 2008 busa powered 7 will get a quarter mile in 12.6 or so, the newer engine might be a bit better as would better tyres on a good day but you're not looking at anything better than 12.4 An R1/Blade car will be up at 12.9 to 13.5 depending on spec, tyres etc.
Turbo powered BEC's have done 11.4 to 11.8 but it's a matter of getting the power down. I think one chap built a monstrous Westfield with slick drag tyres, everything was designed for drag racing and he managed to get into 10 somehting, IIRC 10.6s but that was an exceptional car with big turbo, nitrous, loads of money spent with one aim.

As others have said, BEC quarter mile times are fast but not mindblowing, they just aren't made for it with low power and bad aerodynamics.
But as you were asking for an idea on performance, around town and day to day roads etc if you put your foot down you will leave everything at an amazing rate and the sense of speed on a narrow road is incredible.
They really re silly quick until you are at silly speeds where the aero and low power start to reign it in a bit. Even above 100mph it isn't slow, but just not as impressive as 1st and 2nd gear etc.
Just get it to a track.

Cant wait to pick it up now... You lot geeing the SH*T out of me is not helping at all.
I dont think that a 12.4 is too bad. Not blistering but still a quick time for a road car.
I've been bike racing for a few years now so i dont think the speed is going to bother me at all but i would love to learn how to drive properly and fast. Thats the whole point of getting a good handling car that can take some abuse. Was looking at high powered evo's for a long time but decided against it as they seem like a money pit that is never ending if you all you want is maximum performance.
Can anyone advise me on a good trackday company for cars. Brands is my nearest circuit so thats where i will be going to start with. What sort of times (Brands Indy) in one of these can i expect for a beginner with dodgy tyres and 17" rims???????. (Listen to me already questioning lap times and i have not even picked it up yet.LOL..... You cant take the racer out of someone no matter what)

Will probably be on 15's if it is an MK.I dont think that a 12.4 is too bad. Not blistering but still a quick time for a road car.

With regards to your question about time, I can suggest one thing. Don't time yourself!

hi i work at mk and drive for them.A good driven car round brands should be lapping in around 52 seconds.il have a chat to you when you pick your car up and show you how to drive it.you will be alot better with some 15"wheels and toyo tyre's.
Hi Danny,Yes that would be good if you could help us out with the driving skills. Hope your around when i come to get the car. What width and offset etc 15" wheel would you reccommend? I'm looking at wheels already, what are the usual wheels of choice. I saw a black and red GSXR1000 MK indy in the workshop that had some nice looking wheels on it. Dont suppose you know what they are do you?
What do you think a good, bad and excellent lap of brands indy would be for a complete beginner (ie me), bearing in mind you know the current spec of the car. As you race these things aswell you are the ideal person to know what they are capable of doing. If i got under a minute first time out (without crashng) i think that would be quite good.

What is the rotary engine like? I had a mate who had an Rx7 and he had nothing but grief with it. Is this the usual case with these engines or was he just unlucky? I can see why you chose this engine for your car because they make good power but i did not think they would like to be thrashed too much. Just my opinion as i seem to have a warped view of these due to my mates bad experiences. This was why i went for a bike engined car as they are ultra reliable and have a 6 speed sequential box. Just a holeshot turbo kit for me and then were up for a race then. LOL......

Was up at MK on saturday to have a look at them in the flesh, the wheels are pro race 2 by team dynamics ask danny or barry for a brochure they have a few of them lying around! Will have to meet up for a spin as my driving skill in these are none existant at the mo and need some practice. Happy days
