Vic Check or Not?!
Discussion
Hi All, was wondering about getting a cat c vehicle to base my new kit on,(only use the underpinnings of the donor) would I need a Vic check before I change the vehicle or should I do my 'big' body mod first, go through an SVA and get a new updated V5 stating what the new make is? Any help would be greatly appreciated..

I was going to use the whole chassis/floor of a donor car, chop of the screen and roof and rebody the car.. Basically from the waistline up would be new. Would I be better off getting it through an sva and then get the logbook in the new manufacturers name?
That would be definite SVA (or rather IVA, as you are out of time for the SVA) material, so the VIC would be irrelevant, although you should be able to get an age related plate rather than a Qrobotvillage said:

As has been said you don't mention what the vehicle is.If it is a monoquoque then your conversion will have modified the 'chassis' and will need a new VIN number allocated by DVLA and stamped into the chassis before it can go for IVA. Before DVLA issue the number I'm sure they will want to resolve any VIC type issues. They may therefore want you to take the 'wreck' either to a DVLA office or an IVA test station.
I think you should go to the local DVLA office before you start anything and explain what you are going to do. Take with you every document you have including old MOT and tax discs along with the V5. Also take photos of the wreck and if this is a kit conversion then photos of what the finished conversion looks like. If it is your own design then sketches and drawings of what the finished vehicle will look like. Your level of enthusiasm will make a big difference at this stage as they will likely find reason to refuse you if they think the end result will be unsuitable for use (mad max etc.).
Because you have modified the monoquoque you will end up with a Q plate.

Thanks Steve and all , been looking hard and long at this project so I'm still very much in the development stage.. Do you think I'm better off going for a vic check then before I do any sort of changes so I have a V5 in hand? I'm not buying a kit by the way, i'm designing a new kit and want it to be right from the start based on proved mechanicals. Thank you for all your help by the way..
