A Caterham starter pack, please.

Im almost ready to pull the trigger after seeing an ad for a Caterham starter kit for £5450.

Yes, I know it'll end up at +12k, but Im itching to have a 7, and much as I like the Westy, I *really* want a Caterham.

Tell me its a stupid waste of dollar and a Westy will be half the cost for twice the performance.

Please.

If you really, really want a Caterham, see if this is still for sale.

Thats the problem really.

I want my next car to a real all rounder. I want it to be comfortable enough to do a 2 hour run in and also a semi decent track day tool.

Im so torn between Cats and Westys right now.

Being a 6 foot plus geezer, I also want my head to be below the windscreen.

Im pretty sure I could mod or build a good Westy, but my heart says Caterham....

I dont know.

Just to give a slight opposite view, my car has been driving me mad recently. All this sunny weather and mine is broken. Requires a rebuilt prop and a new gear set. Due to a few deals it's cost me £450 and a fair bit of time and effort which I would much rather have spent driving. A more sensible car wouldn't have done this. Probably.

It will cost you twice as much as a Westy but the resale should be higher.

Put one of those BMW 200 bhp diesels in and it's a sensible everyday car that should manage 60mpg smile

Not really that far down the decision making yet, but yes, do like the idea of a Duratech.

I had a sit in an SV roadsport with lowered floors up at the Race Retro show. Being 6'4" and 18 stone I was thinking that it would not fit. I was wrong.

With the lowered floor I actually looked throught the windscreen rather than over it like normal...

Of course it was not as spacious as my Quantum Xtreme - but what the heck.

The lastv two days have been excellent for blatting - don't worry about a two hour drive, enjoy the experience!

Being of a similar build, thats very encouraging, I drove my bro's Westy and felt like Noddy looking out over the top of the screen.Likewise a full screen Fury.

I want this car to be comfortable *and* fun.

I'm 5'11 and look through the aero screen on my Locost. Having said that my driving position is very reclined with my knees almost level with my shoulders.

What seats were in the Fury? I'm about 6" and without seats there's loads of room before I start reaching the limit of the windscreen. With Cobra Roadsters, my eye level is the same as the top of the screen....

As a Caterham owner I say go for it. Life is too short. Not sure on build costs for a starter kit but a classic costs 13K for a complete kit with everthing new although this doesn't include paint, windscreen or weather equipment and comes with a 1.4K series. My guess is that a car built from a starter kit with a secondhand duratec engine and box will be somewhere around £15-16K.

All the best.

Who needs paint when you have aluminium?

I use this stuff all the time. When people complained about getting dazzled I used it even more.
