Hi all, more questions!
Just checking it wont be a concern. Looking at buying a 7 type car but I dont have a garage. I have a place on the drive waiting so I was going to get one with wet weather top and get an expensive breathable cover as well. Do you think I will have troubles with it essentially being open to the eliments. Mould, plastics going brittle, GRP aging? Do any of you always keep you car under just a cover. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Oh security wont be an issue. I live down a quiet road and will have it chained to the floor with alarm.

not the best scenario by a long way... wouldn't buy something special and store it outside that is for sure... and you might wanna ditch any interior such as carpets and seats in favour of grp seats etc which would help

aluminium and steel are not great together so gonna be tricky to keep it nice, I think damp is gonna wreck the car quickly even with a very good cover

Mine has lived outside for 3 years. I do need to change the light switch for one that is more waterproof, but otherwise mine is a fairly standard BEC with no carpets or padding. This is my car when it snowed in February. It doesn't seem to have any problems living outside, and the GRP is all just as good as when I brought it. There are a few things that you need to keep more of an eye on, such as grease nipples, brake callipers and so on, but other wise mine is treated as normal. My front suspension is due a strip and repaint/powder coat, but it wasn't pristine went I got it.

I put some pics up about another guy doing the same recently.

Depends if your happy with the car taking what nature can throw at it. Chances are as long as its not a show car you'll be fine. They can look a little worn out after a few years but still drive the same and more importantly the fun bit never goes

If you can deal with a gastly big tent like what ive got then fit one of these out front. Its brilliant I cant fault it in terms of practicality just looks damn ugly...like a caravan on your driveway if you get me

Anyways heres some pics;

Only thing I got that helps is that I got a damn big driveway given the size of the house

why not rent a lock up garage from your local council?

Wow you dont even have a cover!! I will be saving for some time so it will be well looked after. Also it is close to my house and I live in a close so its not going to get battered by the eliments ( and wont get too cold). I want the car to be striped so it probably wont have carpets but I have not even got it yet! I was thinking of putting extra stuff over the seats and sensitive things. Also a dehumidifying stick under the cover to stop condensation or mould. I feel guilty in some ways having such a nice car and having no nice parking for it. I will hug it every time I walk past it, then rag the hell out of it at weekends! Oh I cant wait!

That tent thing is a good idea. Where did you get it from? I dont want to rent a garage becasue I dont want to drive one car to a location to drive another. Do I speak to my council about garages then? They may have one local. How much does a rented garage cost?

I dont know much about renting out garages tbh but my 'tent' cost me £245. Its damn sturdy and will last years

You could just get a thin cover to wrap over it which would be loads cheaper although a little more obvious as to whats underneath

The dehumidifying stick interests me though. I did find mine in winter would get damp under there. didnt know such a thing existed??

If the cars painted you may get some small bubbles appearing where the water is wicked through the GRP.
This has happened on my car.

I have copied this idea (bottom of page)

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid...

but still have not bought a cover.

There is actually a medium weight tarpaulin under all that snow! It's just not tied around the front wheels. I'm one of those people that brought the car to drive it. I have seen freezing fog and -4.5 C in it, and I have no heater either. My car gets driven all year round and is currently my only road legal vehicle. Yes, it's not the world's tidiest car. But I neither need or want that sort of car. If it were very tidy I would have had to pay more for it, and I would feel bad about using in the way that I do. This way I can use and abuse it as I see fit, and I should still be able to sell it for more than I paid.

I have one from the local council and its about £16 per month. Its only 3 mins walk from home too - currently used to store my Tiger B6 chassis / body, plus a lot of my furniture until i move house.

3 min walk is not bad I could handle £16 a month too. Especially if it can fit lots in it including the car. To make a dehumidfying stick I would aquire lots of crystals from new trainer boxes and such like. You could buy the crystals too I bet if you look for them. May make your car smell though. It would smell niceer than mould!

Pigeondave just checked your link. Thats a good Idea. Just buy a massive tent and add a zip where you need it! May look like someone is camping on my drive though. I was thinking of a 7 type tight fit cover from soft bits for sevens of something. I have not shopped too much yet.

Another option is an outdoor "Carcoon" or similar - i think there are alternative makes about. Not particularly cheap though.

How does the car "tent" remain in place during high winds?

Mine has several looped strapes that you can be used with the tent hook things. You could make a plate easily to go on the base frame and into a cement floor if you wanted

Because mine has a tubular frame its quite easy to fix it down

I made a similar topic a few months ago here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I've since bought a car and it stays outside under a cover, it's been fine so far! Although I have found a cat in it twice...

Haven't kept it out over the winter yet, but can't see it being too much of a problem.
