Has anybody ever taken a type 9 apart??

I am trying to clean one up and replace the gaskests and oil seals. I need to take it all apart becasue it is going to be sand blasted and powder coated.

When taking it apart I remove all the bolts (6) holding the two halfs together however when I pull it apart it gets stuck (see pic).

Does anybody know where I'm going wrong?

Thanks!!!

The gearbox will need to be completely stripped in order to clean it the way you want to,AFAIR there are also special tool(s)required in order to strip and rebuild the gearbox without ,I think, damaging the bearings, its many years since I did one,so my poor old memory may be playing tricks!!
Personally,I would think twice about stripping to replace gaskets if they are not leaking, and the box is working OK ,though you should be able to replace the oilseals quite easily with a partial strip.
Hopefully someone current on type will be able to give more explicit advice.

I would try the locost builders web site www.locostbuilders.co.uk there are plenty of guys on there that build and strip type 9 gearboxes, they should be able to give you plenty of advice.

same with mine being a yahoo addy, however you can still browse the posts on the transmission section - more often than not your answer will be there somewhere. I need to do mine this winter so post back with what you found out.

Rich

EDIT to add, have you undone and removed the nut that holds the shaft at the tail?

Thanks... managed to get hold of the manual (paper copy)

It turns out that you need to put the gearbox into reverse, remove the gearstick, then under the gear stick you can see the end of the 'selector shaft'. At the end there is a pin which you need to drive out. You then remove the plate at the front of the gearbox and remove the selector shaft, you will then be able to seperate.

Nearly got the two apart, it looks very scary for a first timer!! If you haven't done it before, i'd get yourself a copy of the haynes manual!

Good luck - I stripped the box from my donor car because I was considering using the bellhousing on something else. Was very glad I didn't have to put it all back together again!

I am unable to open the PDF file on the T-9. It requires a password.
