I am looking at purchasing a replica "kitcar" that has been started around 10 years ago. Unfortunately the company is no longer in existance now and the seller has no recepts for the original kit. Is has a fabricated chassis and body so does not have a lot of parts from a donor vehicle other then the engine and gear box. Is there anyway I can register this car without it having to go on a "Q" plate ? not really bothered what age of plate is on it as long as it is not a new plate or a "Q". Hope somebody can help.
Thanks

it should be possible, i am currently (slowly) building a 18 year old kit car, althouhg the company is still going

does you car have a chassis number? as its old, it will probably not be long enough, bu its is a start,

what are the donr components? engine, gearbox, suspension, etc if its all one car you can get an age related plate to that if you get the right numbe of points

also remember that 10 years ago, around when we got the car we are building, there was not even SVA, you just had an mot and that was mostly it, so it definitly wont be designed for an easy IVA pass, but i think it IS doable

what car is it? good luck with your project

Perhaps a bigger problem (or maybe not, depends on the car) is the fact that you will need to pass the IVA test before it can be registered.

As far as the age-related plate is concerned, that will depend on the provenance of the major parts, whether the manufacturer of the kit has closed down or not is not relevant.

Car is a GT40 replica. I realise this will be a bit of a challenge but I have built a couple of basic seven type kitcars many moons ago and more recently completed two complete short circuit cars from scratch so although time consuming , I am looking forward to the challenge but really dont want a "Q" on a car that is designed to be a replica rather than a "KitCar"

Kit Conversions
This is where a kit of new parts is added to an existing vehicle or old parts are added to a kit comprising a manufactured body, chassis or monocoque bodyshell. The general appearance of the vehicle will change and result in a revised description on the registration certificate.
A vehicle will retain its donor registration mark if either the original unmodified chassis or unaltered monocoque bodyshell and two other major components are used. If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used (or an altered chassis or bodyshell from an existing vehicle) together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle. An IVA, ESVA, SVA or MSVA test will be required to register the vehicle.
Where there are insufficient parts from a donor vehicle or in cases where the original registration mark is unknown, an IVA, ESVA, SVA or MSVA certificate will be required to register the vehicle and a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.

So; all you have to do is supply provenance of the two major components from the donor vehiclewhistle

Indeed.

Acquire the correct donor vehicle, hack off any bits required, keep the V5 and tell them that's the car the bits came from.

I can't believe anyone would do such a thing though hehe

My 2001 Caterham was only SVA'd and registered this year, but it was given an X reg plate if that's of any help. As mentioned above, the IVA could change things though.

Eventually got the car that I originally asked the question about. Now looking for an early ford donor vehicle. Have actually got all the parts but want to try and find an age related donor vehicle. car has a variety of donor parts . Has anybody got an old ford granada or coupe etc etc that is beyond repair that I could use as a donor? Thanks in anticipation of your help.

Hi,

You can get all the info and help you need at www.gt40s.com. Also Mick Sollis at Southern GT can also supply any GT 40 related parts and advice you may need.

Regards

Nick
