Webcon Alpha Vauxhall XE- Distributorless
Discussion
does anybody of you have some expirience in webcon alpha ignition managements on 2l vauxhall XE 16valve on Weber carbs, without any other engine mods.:
my problem:
in my recently purchased kit the former owner fitted a distributorless alpha ignition. (with cranksenor and inletair temp-.sender..no throttle position sensor-->ergo 2d mapping possible only)
unfortunately this guy installed the alpha without any further visit at a webcon specialist for programming the management.
so it comes in factory set-up. which i guess is only a basic set-up?
question now: is it possible to get the software from "somewhere" and do the programming myself? is it a complicated precedure? why webcon does not suply these software or has a downloadable file? Emerald has everything downloadable for example.
does anybody have the parameters of the factory basic setup and can explain me the differnce to the programmed set-up? is it really noticabble on a standard engine?
does it make sense in my case to fit a throttle position sensor?

the alpha system is fitted, its more or less brand new (even when bought 2003) so i need help in this matter...its always easy to say: buy something differnt.
why should i install another crank sensor and a trigger wheel, when i already have a crank sensor in the block? can i use the original one?
i only would consider to replace the existing system by a similar complete unit which contains a complete assembled ecu, the wiring loom, software and the use of the original crank sensor.
but back to my existing problem. anybody has some advice?

i contacted webcon a few times.
after the 2nd phone call it was clear that they dont have any clue about what they are talking.
after few emails, they sent me a statement that they cannot help me without having the ecu, incl. wiring loom, coil in their hand and any further contact, even by phone will be chargebale: 21,-pound per quarter hour!!!
to check the ecu will cost 60,-pound, plus shipping. any further modificatins are chargeable too.
very nice!!!
they are selling a system which doesnt work and for further upgrades they want to charge.
the philosophy of webcon is to supply a full working system, mapped for a specific engine, therefore they do not supply any software...so far so good.
but when a new system does not work , which wasnt touched, because nobody does have the software, has a max. ignition advance of 20degrees during high revs...where every automotive mechanic knows that this isnt enough...even the vauxhall original system goes to 30-35degrees....and webcon does not see any faults on their side...i must say f... o..
thats the truth!!
they charge for this ignition system 430pound!!!!
the only possibility to show such companies what they do to their clients is:
try to get their software and copy it!! the italian mafia is nothing compared to them.

There you have your answer.
Despite having the complete, unused, system you have little or no chance of getting it running and can expect no ongoing support from the manufacturer.
Time to cut your losses and fit something else.
If you did decide to go MegaSquirt you will do all the tuning yourself and with the backing of many thousands of other users around the world.
I have two MegaSquirt ECUs, one on my Dakar V8 4x4 and the other I'm in the process of fitting to my V8 Ultima GTR. Both systems I built myself from kits.
Not what you wanted to hear but I suspect it comes as no surprise.

but i want to use my original crank-sensor. that should be possible.
have checked the megjolt homepage....hm...i also need an edis module, wiring harness...sorry, thats too complicated for me. and i presume my electric knowledge isnt enough to get this thing running.
i rather prefer to invest a bit more and get a complete kit from 1 suplier.
are there any alternatives?

FWIW...I was involved with a car that had Webcon management. Same story, Webcon-only mapping, locked system. The owner of the car relented and decided to get it mapped, only to be told by Webcon that it was an obsolete system and they wouldn't touch it.
I installed an Emerald for him, job done. The look on his face when it fired right up on a base map and after a few moments fiddling idled better than it had ever done before was priceless. It's previous map was so far out it took typically 3 sets of plugs to get it warmed up. Fuel consumption was a joke, power way down. After mapping with the Emerald, it did what you'd expect, it started, it went, plus he can now tweak things to his hearts content.

i´m not from UK and our local webcon agent stopped sales and support due to permanent problems with webcon. more or less the same expirience which i have made.
now i found an agent in switzerland which might be able to help. the "only" thing i need is to change the dwell time and eventually the max advance, which might be automatically get sorted in changing the dwell time.
from the logic point of view it does not make sense to buy a new ecu when my system needs such a "little" upgrade, only!!
