hi all
which is the best way to mount a fuel pump? vertical or horizontal, the pump itself will be next to the rh tank (level to the top of the tank) taking its feed from a balance pipe via a inline filter. does it matter either way? any help would be much apreciated thanks

Place the pump so that it's inlet & outlet are lower than the output from the tank, or fuel will drain back into the tank with gravity. When that happens, you'll be pumping air for the first few seconds of cranking - not good for pump longevity.

Depends which pump really.

My R1 pump primes itself on ignition so you aren't cranking when you start the engine. The pump isn't mounted lower than the outlet, and it seems totally fine.

not sure what type of pump it is, but if it a silver or red top they like being mounted vertically as horizontal mounting can cause the shuttle to wear prematurely.

Hi James,

I'm running an R1 too, although not the standard injection pump. The problem is that most of the pumps rely on there being fuel inside for cooling. Fuel pumps are amazingly hungry on power, and not very efficient, which means heat.

Im running a red top and have been for 5 years now, its mounted above the tank, havent had an ounce of trouble since fitted, which is good because its in a very difficult place to get to !
