Ok, this might be a really simple question, but, with the trend of home designing and building cage cars (ie not buying prepared kits from factories), how do you go about getting a chassis number for a chassis you've built yourself (and is therefore not a recognised chassis design)?

Cheers

ring the DVLA at swansea (painful) and ask for the relevant paperwork for IVA/registering a kit car,let them issue a chassis number.
www.locostbuilders.co.uk is a useful source of info

when I did mine I rang the SVA engineer (last year)and he told me to make up a 17 digit letter/number sequence and stamp it on the bulkhead (or as my TVR on the tubular chassis member)
So mine ended up as my name and year of build

You can make up your own number which must now be stamped into the chassis in 7mm high characters on the offside front of the vehicle. There must also be a VIN plate, on a suitable bulkhead.

If I were doing it I think I would get a VIN allocated by your local DVLA office. A puca VIN will cause less problems down the line. The VIN cannot be allocated by Swansea it can only be done from your local office. You also cannot choose which office to use it has to be the office for your area. The number will start SABTVR.
