Hi,

The following was posted on another forum I belong to, anyone know anything about it.

Regards

Nick

Prospective new builders should be aware of new EU regulaions coming into force from Feb 2011. New braking assist systems, including laser warning and self braking systems and soft front bumper areas are to be mandatory to protect pedestrians from injury. Anyone run into a pedestrian at 5 mph ?

For your safety, citizen. You poor children just can't be trusted to make decisions for yourself.

Dave,

This is what I hope, although I think we need to keep an eye on it for the following reason.

"So, beware the magazine articles that say, 'No worries, the IVA is very little different from the SVA'. Maybe it is - now - but PC-BS regulations like those described will be with us, probably sooner rather than later."

Regards

Nick

Hopefully someone with some IVA knowledge can confirm, but if this were a problem it would already be too late. As of a few weeks ago, all newly launched vehicles in the EU must have brake assist, ahead of the deadline you refer to. A similar thing happened with ABS, first it was specified as mandatory on all new designs, then on all new vehicles sold (IIRC didn't they have to extend the deadline to clear non-ABS stock?). Talking of ABS, how long has that been mandatory in the mainstream - 2003? It's still not mandatory for the IVA, is it?

Although the gap between requiring it on new designs and all vehicles sold seems a bit small, the principle remains. I don't know when this legislation was signed off, but given the engineering lead times in the mainstream it's unlikely anything like could be introduced at such short notice, and the IVA, or equivalent, will always lag some way behind.

If you really want to worry about something, worry about the IVA disappearing altogether: registering a kitcar is all but impossible in a number of European countries.

Because the Union of European Socialist Republics SAYS you need them...

And the Union of European Socialist Republics will MAKE you have them...

Why...?

Because it can...

I wonder how all the small manufacturers are going to cope with this?
Morgan? Noble? Ultima? Lotus?
I can't really see them having the money to invest into putting a system like this on the cars, the R&D costs would be enormous.

Laser assist brakes? That'll be fun when it malfunctions!
