hi,
just wondering what the laws are about changing the clocks in my lomax kit car. it currently has the rather ugly citroen clock unit in but want to change them to rather better looking individual (possibly smiths) ones. if i buy a set of second hand clocks or new clocks what do i need to do to make sure that the mileage isn't mis-represented in the eyes of the law?

I'm pretty sure it's only illegal if you claim it's done the newer mileage.

When I change the speedo in my 2nd kit car, I took photographic evidence of the old gauge value, and when I sold it, I told them what had happened (I also told my insurance company about the change, too).

The 'zero' mileage was when I had the engine rebuilt, and completely stripped the car down, replacing all the bushes and bearings and so forth.

If you're worried, then you could always clock the new gauge forwards - if it's a mechanical unit, then just putting it into an electric drill should do it (although that could take some time depending on the gauge). If it's electronic (with magnets, for example), then you'd need to rig something up.

When I changed mine I got the insurance company to send me a letter stating the mileage on my old clock. It can also be seen via the MOT certificates that the mileage is similar to all the other years, so hopefully this should be okay for when I come to sell it!

ok, thanks for the replies. so basically what you are saying is if i tell the insurance, make a note along with photos of new and old clocks (at time of fitting) with my paperwork and also keep the clocks then i will be okay. so i don't need to inform the dvla about the change?

You will probably find that you need to re-calibrate the speedo.

If so Speedy Cables can do this and at the same time they can reset the odometer back to zero or to any reading you choose.

You could get them to set it to the correct mileage as shown on your Citroen speedo.
