Hi guys,

A couple of very basic 'build' type questions.

Firstly, I need to cut a circular hole into a plastic catch tank for the pipe from the dry sump system. The diameter is going to be too large for a drill, so what's the most elegant way of doing it? Obviously I could just start hacking at it with a knife, but I thought I'd enquire in case I'm missing a trick!

Secondly - the sticking bit - can anyone recommend a suitable glur for sticking carpet to an aluminium panel. Using adhesive seems to be the done thing in this application, but there are a few recessed bolt heads and the like that I might want to get at in the future, so something that can be peeled off cleanly and without too much effort would be good.

How about a hole saw? Used with care and a low speed you can get pretty good results. Use a decent make, tool shops will usually have a selection of sizes. I lile the Bosch and Starret ones.

For sticking I would use double sided tape, the type specifically for carpet, you can get it from Scrwewfix etc. If the surface is tricky you can use extra layers.

For carpets I'd be tempted to use velcro. You never know when you may have to remove the carpet in a kit car.

Velcro can be good too, just needs an educated guess as to how likely carpet removal might be in the area concerned. Obviously it's thicker than double sided, and it still needs to be secured to the carpet and the panel. The choice might depend on how visible the edge is.

The tape will usually pull off the carpet ok, but if it doesn't, just put a new layer on when re-installing it. Any residue on the aluminium can be removed with cellulose thinners or 'StickStuff Remover', both of which should be available in any decent ironmongers.

It would have to be pretty major for you to want to remove the carpet - there's nothing serviceable bolted on to the panel - so I'm tempted to glue it. That or I might just rip it out. It's an uncarpeted floor on a track car with just a rather arbitrary section of carpet over the transmission tunnel and up the back of the cockpit.

I use Evostick on my aluminium panels, on the bits that need lifting now and then just a few small dabs that can be pulled away and restuck later works ok, depending on the coating on the aluminium, evostick doesnt always stick hard too, try a little first.
Failing that a few well spaced pop studs painted the same colour as the carpet might be ok?
