Quick question, but one that's just sprung to mind - do newly road registered kit cars get the same 3 year hiatus on needing an MOT like a type approved car would? I'd assume so, but you know what they say about those.

They get the normal three years if registered on new current year registrations. Age related and Q plates need MOT one year after registration.

My understanding is that Q or age related requires both IVA and MOT before it can be registered. Then every year thereafter. This makes sense as not all the parts are new and could already be worn out at the time of the IVA. The IVA does not look for worn components only that, in the testers opinion, the parts used are suitable for purpose i.e you haven't used a Mini track rod end on an extreme 4X4. The MOT will check the TRE is not worn.

However I know of several examples where this has not been applied. The vagarities of DVLA standards.

Think its just best to say its a grey area, I went 3 years on a age related without needing an MOT on two separate occasions, on the second car paper tax reminder said I needed an MOT, taxing online said not ?

Nothing wrong with taking it for an MOT, whats the likely fail points ? Not to many on a well maintained low mileage kit and if it does fail on say a ball joint rather a MOT fail than an on the road failure ?

If your car has been SVA'd it doesn't need an MOT for 3 years, simple as.

I went through this with the Caterham last month. In fact that's a more complicated case because it's actually a 2001 kit that was raced for a few years, then dry stored, then finally registered last year so it's on an X plate. Nonetheless I took the V5 to my local DVLA office (the Post Office should be able to do it, but mine were awkward) and showed them it was a 2009 registered car with an SVA last year and they agreed an MOT wasn't needed and put the tax straight through.

Sorry, not true.
My Dakar had to have both SVA and MOT before Portsmouth DVLA office would register it.
As I already said it seems to vary from office to office.

I'll second that, at Maidstone on a age related plate registration I needed MOT to get the number plate and every year they have asked for MOT, didnt get 3 yr grace here
