Getting a really good finish with 2 pack clear is no problem.

However, dealing with the dreaded pinholes is causing me endless grief. The lacquer wells into fisheyes and the only way of beating this seems to be to brush paint the first coat. A laminating stippling action seems to fill the pinholes whereas the spray doesn't. The snag is of course the misery of endless sanding of the brushed coat prior to spraying the high gloss on.

Anybody know how the professionals do it?

personally I put a very thin coat of clear gel coat in the moulds first, so I don't get the pin holes!

They use special low temp long cure carbon, which is designed to give a high quality cosmetic finish.

Or if you are not fussed about the carbon's properties, wet lay up can be used. It will chip and crack like GRP though.

Yes I would put some normal Polly Gel in first, but if you check the Carbon Mods Sight they have a paint on Epoxy gel for external work, that you heat once painted on with a Hair Dryer/ Paint stripper to remove any pin holes..... I'm sure there's a YouTube link....
