is it simply a case of informing dvla of engine no change or more involved?

And your insurance if it is a different spec. I think just engine no and CC's for the DVLA.

As we all know it depends on which office you use.
DVLA will most likely want a receipt (on headed paper) for the engine. Better still if you have the V5 for the car the engine came out of. They may also want an engineers report saying the engine is fitted in the vehicle. You may have difficulty getting someone to do a 'report'. I got my local MOT station to invoice me £10 for an inspection. The invoice said...To inspect vehicle xyz123 and confirm engine type XXX numbered 123456az123 is fitted.

This satisfied the report criteria (at least for my local office).

Or if you're me, you just send the amended V5 off with the new engine number and away you go. This was only for an engine number chnage mind. Even if I was changing the engine for a different type, I'd still send the V5 off and see what happens. Worst case, you need the proof they might ask for anyway. Best case, it comes back chnaged for no extra hassle.

You only need to inform them as per The Road Vehicles (Registration & Licensing) Regulations 2002, which is limited to data on the V5 - i.e. the engine number and CC.

If you do that you have fully met your obligations.

The fact you ahve changed the engine type etc. if not their business.
