Three wheeler handbrake law,

My JZR has been off the road now for two years, Im taking it for an MOT this week some time but just had a thought.

Have a read somewhere that a new rule has come into effect regarding the handbrakes on trikes?

I my handbrake is from an old mini, acting upon the rear drum brake.

Many thanks, Mitch

I haven't heard anything, although 2cv hand brakes act on the front wheels, not the rear like on your JZR, i can't see why there would have been a change that would mean you would have to modify yours, and even if there was a change, i'm sure you would not need to retro fit, most laws on cars only apply to new ones, but as yours was registered on the older system i can't see there being a problem.

As far as I know a handbrake has to operate on all the wheels of an axle.
So if fitted to the front of a 2F1R, that's both wheels. It also means that it's fine & legal to operate on the single rear.

For a definitive answer, ring Vosa and ask!

Surely they cannot apply changes retrospectively. Once registered and on the road initially would set how various things are operated, not just the handbrake. My 1982 Midas has sat in the garage for years waiting for a rebuild. If it just a straight rebuild I won't have to add side repeater indicators.

This...

changes are not applied retrospectively, it's just for latest standards (otherwise there would be no cars on the road built pre catalytic converters, for example!)

Yup changes are not retrospective.
They apply if you need a new MSVA. Then whatever the requirement was at that MSVA isn't changed for the rest of the vehicle life.
