Never been my kind of thing, 7 style cars. Having a browse and theres some nice cars for sale, so I popped over to youtube to watch some videos of them and all of a sudden I'm a believer!! They look so much fun!
How are they to drive? They look to handle very well and appear to be well engineered?
I'm still not totally crazy about the styling, well actually they look good it's more the fact that they're not as individual because theres loads of 7 style cars. But then again who cares when you can do this on your commute!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McC3VxA_Bjk&fea...
Oh and the noise!
Just when I'd gone off the idea of getting a bike engined car. Bloody youtube.

I have been looking at building a bike engined 7 and have been in a MK INDY R but I have to say that I preffered the MAC#1 Worx R that I was taken out in and the guys at Mac#1 were so freindly, knowledgable and passionate about there cars. Thats what I'd buy.

just got this thing in my head that they're only 130ish bhp and might not be enough?
Get over it. Better yet, get a ride.
When cars are this light, headline numbers have very little to do with enjoyment. It's ALL about the delivery. Even small power brings a big rush in a light enough car - and a BEC is going to be a minimum of 40-50KG lighter than the equivalent build with a car engine, any car engine. This improves the entire envelope in ways nothing else will touch; stop thinking only in terms of straight-line stomp (that is a given, beleive it or not) and consider the entire snick-snick, left-right, carve, brake, turn, accelerate...<repeat>
... The delivery of a BEC is completely different to anything else on winding roads - you have to work at driving, but it rewards like nothing else, too - if that is what you really want.
After nearly 2yrs of lookng and trying 7s and sevenalikes, some with mental power on paper (and after wanting such from childhood) - I bought a Fury spyder R1 earlier in the year. Best.Toy.Evah.

These cars are harsh, crude, noisy, and totally impractical...
Right, now that's out of the way - they are heaps of fun to drive, accelerate and corner like nothing else you've driven, and generally have a huge grin factor!
I would never consider using mine as a day-to-day vehicle - it's basically a toy that goes out when I'm in the mood for some fun. As for styling - it's minimalist, and only the Atom is more minimal!

Mmm still more drawn to a sylva phoenix.
Should I be put off at all by the old 919 blade motors? I've been told they're good, just got this thing in my head that they're only 130ish bhp and might not be enough?
Obviously I'm a bit biased but I prefer the closed wheel look too!Should I be put off at all by the old 919 blade motors? I've been told they're good, just got this thing in my head that they're only 130ish bhp and might not be enough?
If you want to find out just how quick a well set up BEC can be, make your way to Llandow on 18th September and I'll take you out for a few laps!!
Yazza, I had an 893 blade in my Fury, circa 125 bhp, now have maybe 150bhp of R1 in the Phoenix. In all honesty I cant say the R1 feels any faster in the real world, although it is slightly taller geared. Very few people got out of that 893 and said it was slow. 0-60 in that was about 4.3 seconds one-up, two-up maybe 4.5? But 0-60 is not a true measure as they are not the fastest thing off the line when you engage the clutch sometimes. In gear times and the handling are devestating. As a guide, Rob T's Caterham Superlight has around 215 bhp, somewhere between R400 & R500 power. When we are on track together his is slightly faster, but not 60hp faster like you would expect. Maybe 1 second a lap? What I am saying is they punch well above their (light)weight!
And good choice with a Phoenix!

If you're going out with Pete make sure you've had a prior evacuation...! If you want to find out just how quick a well set up BEC can be, make your way to Llandow on 18th September and I'll take you out for a few laps!!

Always nice to know that I've initiated an "Allied Carpets" (Massive Clearance!)
I hope that you will give the same pleasure to others in your new toy Nigel!
No, the live axle is fine but you are limited to a 3.54 RS2000 diff ( but plenty of LSDs available for it) down a bumpy country lane you would notice the difference back-to-back with IRS, but it's not worth worrying about as long as the car is the right price and good condition. On a smooth track the live axle can been seen as an advantage in some respects. Stop faffing and just buy one!!! An early blade engine with a 3.54 and 13" 205 rear yokos gives about 127mph if I recall. Fast enough for most tracks except Snetterton fir example.

t off a shovel. You should be able to get one for £6k-£7k and they are very light too, a whole wheel lighter.... plus maybe a bit more....

I thought I would probably be wrong. Is yours the nice blue one with the classic front that was for sale on here??
